Pulled Over for Tints--Second Time!!

Went to the car wash in Washington Twp after work, got just feet from Pitman's boro line & a Wash. Twp. cop (monitoring construction at the intersection)pulls out behind me. I knew as soon as he pulled out I was in his sights. Sure enough, after I turned at the light, his lights go on.
Takes my reg, lic, ins card, comes back. "You know sir, tints and a license plate cover (I have a pale blue plastic 'frame' over my front plate) are illegal in NJ."
Luckily, I just got a warning this time because I told myself if I got a second ticket for tint they were coming off the front wimdows.
He was actually pleasant compared to the pipsqueak who ticketed me in Pitman & then lied to the chief when I complained about his attitude.
SO, now I guess I have to sweat everytime I drive through Washington Twp.
So, watch out, guys, it's dangerous out there!

Hi Dill: At Auto Magic in Glassboro. My future son-in-law is the mgr (ask for Jim-tell him how lucky he is to be marrying my daughter). Ask RXSeven-1; he just had his done there. I think they did a good job at a good price (mine were a birthday gift).

I thought of getting those plates after I got ticketed the first time. Plus..I have 3 of those PBA cards which I forget to whip out.

PS Thanks for the good words; I'll let Jim know.

Law Enforcement plates help alittle, the proceeds go to the officer down memorial and the familes of those officers.

At least you got warnings, but I would recomend taking off that plate frame if I was you, IMO.

Yeah, Alucard, I am taking that off today. I just liked the way it "toned down" the hideous front plate on my car.

The cops in NJ are hard on window tint. When I was a security police ofcr (USAF)stationed in NJ I got stopped for tint. The female trooper that gave me the ticket waited for me to pull out of a hotel parking lot before stopping me. I identified myself by showing her my military ID and badge. She made it very clear she didn't care I was a police ofcr. After she gave me the ticket I called the local barracks and asked the dispatcher if she could issue me a ticket for tint. He said technically yes but we usually don't bother military ppl....especially the cops. Here's the kicker....I then told the dispatcher I didn't even have NJ tags on my car...I have VA tags. He asked for the troopers name and when I said her name he replied...."Really, she must be PMS'n today or someone must have made her mad just before she saw you"

Around here if you're inside of the city limits most coppers don't care about the tint. But if you step outside of the city into the little mini-burbs surrounding the area I live, they'll more likely than not bust you for it. Guess it just goes to show their priorities...

ok so this raises a lil question for me. im planning on moving back to jersey in december but keep all my stuff in VA for a lil bit for reasons of insurance, reg, and state inspection. i am also not sure how long i will be living there. i think it would be pointless to to change everything if im just there for a lil while. my windows are not tinted at the moment but if i have them tintd which is legal here in va, would a nj cop give me a ticket just for being in the state with tint?? does anyone know how that works?

Did you see Alucard's response (#11 above)? He said they cant ticket out-of-state equipment.

After showing her my ID/badge I asked if the tint law applied to vehicles registered out of state. I guess I irritated her cause she got really smart and asked..."Where are you stationed"....I replied..."NJ"...she replied..."I don't care where you are from your still getting a ticket." She then said, "since you are stationed in NJ you have to abide by all NJ laws".

See, whenever I see a cop and I think he's going to pull me over, I just put the windows down (being a cute girl ftw). I've had dark tint and no front plate for a while now and so far, so good.

*knock on wood*

I've wanted to rip off the ugly front plate for a while and do some light tinting, but i just dont have time to deal with getting pulled over and arguing with overzealous cops.. as it is, i get hit with a LIDAR gun at least once a week on the GSP on my way to or from class... sigh

To try to answer your questions....

1stgen8: She was being a *****. Just cause your stationed here dosent mean anything. If your car is registered in another state, then it has to abide by those state laws. I would have fought that ticket, you would have won.

bottoms up: If your car is registered in another state we technically cant enforce equiptment violations. But if you are stopped and you say that you are in jersey now, you have to change all your stuff over and if you dont theres some hefty fines if you get a ticket. Also if you commit any other offense ie: speeding etc. they may issue you an equiptment violation such as tinted windows instead. If they do that obviously I wouldnt complain.

Mike: Is it illegal to drive with your interior lights on?
