that huge crush on the driver side roof... first and probably second and third point of impact... i'd say that a-pillar is very strong if i didnt get crushed

Wow! That roof really held up considering you did a multiple rollover. Glad you're OK. Those side curtains probably kept you out of some trouble, too. Send the structural engineers in Hiroshima a Christmas card.

i dont have to get another rx-8... i want to. handling (other than in the accident) is an A+.. now safety is an A+ now that i know. if i can walk out of an rx8 after multiple flips... then this car is one of the safest cars i can drive in. look at the pics of the passenger side.. the window is still there intact halfway down (i was smoking a cigarette).

Glad you're ok. I'm impressed at how the doors stayed closed and kept their shape. The latches they use for the rear doors appear to be very well designed and built.

On second look it looks like even rear pax would have made it through that reasonably well.

You are lucky to have escaped without serious injury.

Luckier still not to have taken out someone else sharing the road with you, or hurt a passenger in your car. If you've not sat in church with the family of a 10 year old struck dead by a speeder, or come a hairsbreadth from losing your own child in a needless accident, you might not be able to relate. It would have been a lot for you to live with.

It bothers me to see people in this thread perpetuating the belief that Traction Control and/or DSC left on would've prevented the outcome. TC and DSC are driver assists, not substitutes. They basically dabble the brakes and/or drop the throttle to help balance and correct a minor loss of traction. Does anyone really think our low-torque RX-8s can break rear-wheel traction on dry pavement at 80mph in any gear, just from flooring the throttle?

DSC and TC will not save a car from an idiotshit move that totally upsets the dynamic of the chassis and makes the car seriously lose traction, such as a sudden jam on the brakes followed by a snap lane change with foot to the floor at somewhere northwards of 80mph.

Good luck and better judgement in the future.

he said he was on the gas when he hit the gas again, and i do believe that the "low torque" 8 can break the wheels loose on grass at 80 mph. id ask someone to go out and try it for themselves, but i think we found that outcome already.

In the last 25 years I've seen countless multitrauma patients; both innocents and
idiots who cause accidents, disabilties and death. One that especially sticks out in my memory was an 18 year old "boy" who did not know how to ride a motorcycle, but thought he did. Without a helmet he throttled the bike straight into a wall.
Literally, he had no brain after that. Everyone, please drive defensively and use your brain.

I dont want to sound mean by any means but do you think there was any mistake on your part? You said you were trying to 'catch up' with the IS300 and you were smoking cigarette too! I never smoke in my 8 (manual transmission) but i do sometimes in my other auto transmission beater and I become very cautious when I do that.

Glad you walked away from the wreck. Drive safe and I hope you enjoy many years of driving with your new pearl 8 (drool).

A few things come to mind:

1) You're lucky as hell to have walked away from that.

2) Without a seatbelt, you'd have been ejected and killed

3) They should have ticketed you for reckless driving. You were driving like a fool and you paid the pricetag for it.

4) Damn lucky you didn't collect anyone else as you flew off the road. That reckless driving would have been felony vehicular homicide.

Folks, don't ratrace each other in traffic, on expressways, etc. Save that **** for the race track.

Sorry about your car, but I have NO sympathy for people who drive like idiots. You got far less than what you deserved in the situation. What you deserved was at least a VERY expensive ticket and a misdemenor criminal charge.
