Well I am taking mine into Brandywine Mazda, PA this Monday. I really don't want to take it here because they seem to treat the customers as being stupid. So I printed out the flow chart and my several past stalling complaints and am going to tape them to my steering wheel. The service manager asked if I would be dropping it off and I told him I would be there in the morning. Not too excited about how this is going to go...

Do you guys know if we can bring in our cars for the engine recall service without receiving the recall letters? Has anyone in the NYC area received the letters yet? I tried to make an appointment but the service ppl basically kept me on hold and tried to brush me off and pretended not to know what I was talking about. Also, can anyone suggest any good dealers for this recall in the NYC area? thanks.

I'm in CT, and just got mine back from the recall test....I didn't get the letter, and they did it. I think it's the service manager's call to do it or not though...

I believe the best dealer for service near NYC is Wayne Mazda in Wayne, NJ. About 20-30 minutes west of the city.

Well I received my car back this afternoon from Brandywine Mazda...

Dropped car off at 7AM, was not offered a rental. To be fair I didn't ask either, thought it was odd that they did not offer the rental. Asked to do the state inspection since they had the car. Had a phone call at 1PM, car was done.

Got to Brandywine and talked to the manager. Told me everything was fine and the inspection was done. Found my car got into it, noticed it was washed and vacuumed, also was filled with fuel. I started to read through the service ticket and found that they replaced the plugs and reflashed the PCM. I had left a copy with my old service tickets where I have brought the car in for the stalling issue in the past as well as asking about the rough idles. The paper was gone but the rough idle is still there. No mention of this on the service ticket. I will ask again on my 30k service.

All in all, the car runs smoother, although I attribute that to the new plugs. Mine is an AT and I noticed the shifting is cleaner. I used to get some 'bouncing' between gears. Brandywine did fine on this service, actually treated me like a person this time.

I will be pushing the car when the summer comes back to get it to stall. It wasn't hard once the temp made it into the mid 90's.

Does anyone notice that the car sounds different after the recall? When I first start the car it runs upto 3k RPMs then settles in but for the first few seconds it make some weird sounds like it is not getting any oil at all. It only last for a few seconds but doesn't sound right to me.

Went through a tank of gas already, the milage didn't change any.

Appointment made for Tuesday the 14th @ Wellesely to do the recall and the oil change. They also said they will do the starter and battery replacement if it hasn't been done already. Guy was nice on the phone and great when I asked about a loaner for the day.

Will update when I all is said and done!

I take back all the good things I said about Wellesley Mazda. I got their "Alignment, balancing, and tire rotation" special and their idea of rotating tires is switching the left tires with the right ones. I noticed this because 2 of my tires have distinct curb marks and they were not rotated properly. The two rears were switched places, and the two fronts were switched places. I spoke with the service guy on the phone and his excuse was "we always put the tires with the most tread in the rear". It was obvious that the tires in the front had less wear on them, but he just repeated the same thing over and over again. I got the service package because I haven't had time to rotate the tires myself but it looks like im gonna end up doing it since there are no competent Mazda dealers in this area.

Hadn't seen this thread til today, sut here's my .02

Letter arrived yesterday for me as well. Recall work was done w/my 9k oil chg ~ 3 weeks ago. Rental (taurus - leather/power everything, but still a taurus) was paid for. 8 was washed, tank filled.

Autocenter in Middletown RI has been great every time I've been in. Typical PIA when it comes to setting up appts, but great otherwise. As in - "well your car may not fall w/in the range for the recall. Why don't you come in for the oil change & we'll check to see if you need the recall work, b/c you probably don't"

umm, it's an 05 - the recall applies to ALL 05s. I asked the service guy to check my VIN and call me back b/c it would be MUCH more convienent for me to get a rental while they did all the work.

[rant]Sure, I'd love to take a day off to come in for an oil change & stand around while you confirm my car needs the recall. Dumbass.[/rant]

Bought my 8 at Grecco Mazda, NJ. Heres my story.

At the time of purchase (1 month ago), I asked whether the recall had been done. Salesman said "If Mazda issued a recall then it would have been performed already". Sounds like a yes to me. So I thought it was done, pre-purchase.

That day they were running late with it saying it was being serviced, including an oil change. 1 month later I changed the oil myself. Ive changed my oil for the last 10 years and the stuff that came out did not look like 750 mile oil. It looked like Folgers Breakfast Blend (dark, watery, frothy)....so I doubt they changed the oil as claimed. Are rotaries that harsh on oil?

So, back to the recall issue. The day after I bought the car I noticed it had no engine cover. No big deal, just ship it to me (Im 1.5 hours away). Called Grecco, said they'd take care of it. 2 weeks go by, called again. Ok, ya, Ill get that to you. 2 more weeks go by so I called service this time, service guy says they'll ship it. While I had him on the phone I asked about the recall that "was already done". He runs the VIN, it wasnt done.

I will say this, I got a smokin' deal on the car and they didnt try to haggle me on the price at all.

^ What state do you live in? Reason I ask is because some states require the dealer to perform any and all recalls on the car before purchase. I know MA is like this and if a dealer does sell a car without doing it they can be fined a boat load of dough! Look into your states laws really quick and possibly report them (if service was bad and feel like sticking it to 'em a little bit.).

Still can't believe they did some form of engine bay work took your engine cover off and never put it back on. Says alot about their tech's, and yes our car is somewhat harsh on oil (hell it eats it haha). If you ever take it to a dealer again mark mental or physicaly where your cap is positioned and even the filter.

I take my 8 to this dealer also.

Matter of fact I am taking it in tomorrow for a new engine.

I got a taurus too.

In the defense of the service guys there.... The manager and most technicians there now just started there about a month ago. Far as I know did not come from a previous Mazda dealership.... So he wasn't even aware of the recall at that time.. They were still getting their bearings after the other Service guys took another job with another dealership.

Took mine to Mapleshade Mazda in Turnersville. I was satisfied with the service dept. They "said" it didnt require anything material wise. I did get the full tank of gas and a damn good wash job. The gas i didnt care about they giving me because i drive enough to burn it up in a few days so no biggie. All good

Right. I'm not complaining. I'm patient enough to just handle that stuff politely and it usually works out fine.

The previous srv mgr (Angelo) had the same reliance on the computer system; and seemed to have a similar approach. I think it's pretty standard - it's the approach where they really do want to provide good service, but assume that every owner knows nothing about their vehicle. Frankly, they're probably correct in that assumption 95% of the time.

And I'm really curious if your 8 is AT or MT - since I haven't seen too many in our area needing a new engine. Not sure if I missed it in a previous post.

I have a 2004 MT RX-8.

43,000 miles on it.

I knew Angelo pretty well. The new guy there is Brian. He is pretty good also.

I was disappointed at first when Angelo left.. And also the Master Tech Rob who lives in my town. But they are really good there.. Haven't had any problems thus far knock on wood.

I will be there today dropping off my car for my new engine.

Really! Sorry to hear about the new engine. I was hoping you'd say your 8 was an AT. It would have eased my mind a bit . . .

It makes it a bit difficult to keep telling myself "it's only in the really warm climates." Would you mind giving a little more info?

Did you redline it much? Lots of heavy traffic driving?

I'll have to call them today, too. CEL is on - meh.
