got pulled over for noise violation in fairfax county
I drive a VR currently have rp superflow and greddy sp2. On the way to the video store. the po po pulled me over for having an illegal exhaust. saying that if he could hear it from a block away it's too loud. I asked him what about those mustangs/ big trucks w/ dual exhausts? they sounded louder than mine. his response was because they are factory and mine are not. totoal bull crap

I hear about **** like this and Virginia all the time, sorry it happened to you. I try to avoid Virginia as much as possible because it sounds like the cops there are jerks.

heres one for you guys. i got pulled over in ocean city maryland for my exhaust. not because it was too loud, i was in pretty dense traffic, stopped at a red light. i was pulled over because it wasnt an oem exhaust. well i got home that night and did some research. md law states that it is illegal to operate a vehicle on md roads if the exhaust is no oe or oem replacement.

Odd. I drove around for two weeks in MD with a very very loud exhaust. Several times the 5-0 were next to me or behind me and they never even looked.

Is that against VA law ? YES LINK to Code
What you can do about it? Get the law change, the cop was doing his job.
à Exhaust systems must be comparable to the designs installed as standard factory equipment. An exhaust system is illegal if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory exhaust system that came on that particular make of vehicle. In addition, the exhaust system shall be in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. Headers are illegal if they increase the noise level of the vehicle above the factory level.

I guess some states are less free then others... that totally sucks... I think they have a lot of those restrictive codes in European counties as well. Must be a bunch of mamby pambies writing laws down there..taking the fun outa life like that is totally bogus.

i don;t believe that law i live right outside of ocean city. erlich claimed that he wouldn't pass that law plus sema stepped in and blocked that from going through.
you had to do something to **** that cop off or it was an OCPD just being himself they are all jackasses
i had a focus with a 4-2-1 header no cat and a 2.5" catback it was SOOOO DAMN LOUD if you've ever heard an NA FC with no cats and a catback you will understand how loud it was mine was equal to that. and i never got pulled but yet i did get pulled for passing another car and he said i was streetracing
actually the topic of that law was discussed in an issue of SCC in the rumors and lies section. now there is a decible limit in MD

i believe this is the particular subsection we want when discussing this
(a) Modification that increases sound prohibited.- A person may not modify the exhaust system or any other noise abatement device of a motor vehicle driven or to be driven on any highway in this State in such a way that the noise emitted by the vehicle exceeds that emitted by the vehicle as originally manufactured.
(b) Operation of improperly modified vehicle prohibited.- A person may not drive on any highway in this State a motor vehicle with an exhaust system or noise abatement device modified in a way prohibited by subsection (a) of this section.
and here is a link to md's laws.
in researching this, i also found this
§ 22-404.5. Power booster systems prohibited; exceptions.
(a) Definitions.- In this section, "power booster system" means any device installed in a motor vehicle which allows liquid nitrous oxide to combine with gasoline for the purpose of increasing engine power.
(b) Use prohibited.- Except as provided in subsection (c) of this section, a person may not operate on a highway a motor vehicle equipped with a power booster system.
(c) Exceptions.- A person may operate on a highway a motor vehicle equipped with a power booster if:
(1) The vehicle is enroute to or from a track where the vehicle is used for racing and the power booster system is inoperative; or
(2) The container of nitrous oxide has been removed from the vehicle.
(d) Identification decal.- Every motor vehicle equipped with a power booster system shall be identified with a decal that:
(1) Is a diamond shaped design consisting of the words "Compressed Gas D.O.T. No. 1070" in silver scotchlite letters 1 inch high on a black background with a silver scotchlite border;
(2) Is issued by the Office of the Fire Marshal or from a nitrous oxide industry source; and
(3) Is attached to the left front and right rear bumper of the vehicle.
(e) Regulations authorized.- The Office of the Fire Marshal may adopt regulations necessary to carry out the provisions of this section.
(f) Fee for decal.- The Office of the Fire Marshal or nitrous oxide industry source that issues the vehicle identification decal may charge a fee for the issuance of a vehicle identification decal not to exceed the reasonable cost of preparation and distribution.
