haven't seen one in between Franklin County PA & Hagerstown MD & Frederick MD yet. Please post as you see them emerge (not every one, please, just in your area) and give an idea of density / numbers. I grew up in IL where we had cicadas and / or locusts some years that were noisy, so I have an idea of what to expect).

 

This area gets some cicadas every year - except last year, which seemed to be completely devoid of the little crunchy fellas.

During the '87 emergence, they were so thick in places it was like a brown snow storm.

 

Went out walking last night at Lake Anna in Reston. It was scary. The ground was so covered that you couldn't walk without stepping on 3 or 4 per step. So they are out here. That's for sure. Pics to come.

 

i work in reston, and they are scattered around the brick steps in front of my building. everyone in the building gathered outside at the sighting of the first one last week. i haven't seen any in prince william county yet...*crossing my fingers*! i'm driving to TN this weekend, so i really hope my baby stays somewhat clean, (compared to the pic above anyway).

 

I'll try and keep my mouth closed while driving.:-)

It was so dissapointing here that I didn't even bother. I could have literally taken a pic of two or three of them. Seriously other than the time when I walked around Reston I haven't even touched one cicada. I think after driving my car (I didn't even bother to garage it) I hit maybe 3 or 4 over the last two weeks. After reading "biblical proportions" in the Washington Post I was scared. Around here though apparently there has been so much constrution that there just wasn't the "turnout" that we expected. Sorry for the letdown guys.

 

I even kept my camera on me for two weeks straight! I went out to Reston because I heard it was bad. Since then I've had my camera, but I've never been back to Reston, or even to a place like that. I did get some pics of a Maybach driving down the road next to me though!

 

Maybe I'll drive out to Reston tonight to see if they are still bad...

Thanks for posting my yellow rx8 as a warning of what your rides will look after you have driven past your cicadas / grasshoppers .

I went on a 5000km trip with my rx8 , thank goodness i had the Australian grill kit produced by Hymee , IT HELPED PROTECT MY OILCOOLER AND MY air cooler , without it my car would have most likely overheated .

The sky went totally dark at times with millions of grasshoppers , some of them comming to an end on my car .

See, that's what everyone said it'd be like here. They said it'd look like it was snowing, even a blizzard, cicadas. I don't think I could have caught a flying one if I tried. It was a NICE letdown.

 

Thought you guys might like to know that they're still alive and kicking in Leesburg. Went to the Potomac Celtic Festival yesterday and they were EVERYWHERE. They weren't as bad as they were in Alexandria two weeks ago, but they were still crawling all over the tents, trees, grass, people, etc- and the noise was something else.

Saw one poor cicada get captured by a 5 year-old. Saw same 5 year old three hours later with (I assume the aforementioned) cicada. Felt kinda bad for the cicada.

 

i still havent seen a cicada... where are they? i guess we longislanders arent gonna get them. lucky us

 

You guys can call me weird but for some reason I'm going to miss the poor little guys. They're just doing what nature has programmed them to do and that's essentially to procreate so that in 17 years they can do the same thing over again.

Besides having to sweep my sidewalk every few days, they were never really that much of a bother to me. My car was covered most of the time but even driving on the roads in my "8" I could easily wash off the remains off my car with relative ease.

 

i drove about 200 miles on the PA turnpike today and killed about three thousand of them I think, i lost count there towards the end. I have the same drive back home before I can start trying to figure out how to clean the car. ugh.
