Mazda BBQ

I don't know how many 8's will show up but I'm going to the BBQ in south windsor the first weekend of June. I'm not going to dyno my car (just going for the eats and cars :D ), anyone else planning on going. If so, do you want to meet up before shooting down?

Stay tuned to the NE Forum Portero. We have a lot of get togethers in NH because thats a central location to a lot of folks on here. Last year we did Rev-It-Up and Cape Cod run with the Protege Club. If you hang out here, you'll know about all the get togethers.

Welcome to the club. I had a bit of trouble shifting into second smoothly at first too. I shift out of first gear at about 2,500rpms and I usually get a good smooth shift.

For 1st gear I give it about 1,500rpms when launching to get a smooth launch however I just bought my car back in January and I put snow tires on it a week after buying it. The snow tires drag signifigantly more than the stock tires so it takes a little more power to get moving. On the stock tires I recall barely giving it gas to get it going. You can probably launch at about 1,100 or 1,200 rpms no problem but I only drove with them for a few days so I can't accurately recall what I reved to. I can't wait to put them back on in a week or so. The snow tires are a life saver, literally, however they really slow the car down.

Enjoy your 8 :D

Welcome! Always cool to have another 8 in the area! Are you considering joining us on the spring run up in VT? Great way to meet a bunch of other cool 8 owners

When you say 1st and 2nd are a little shakey, do you mean they seem to be hard to get into without grinding a bit?

Has to be asked... are you an experienced stick driver or pretty new at it? If your new to it, some practice will help a lot. Having said that though, many of us have noticed 1st and second seem beyond a bit notchy at times... and a lot of us have swapped out the tranny and diff fluids. Seems to help a lot. Great thing to do any ways at your first oil change. If you do decided to swap it out, here is what a lot of us have gone with.

Oil for diff and tranny -

You will need two quarts of MT-90 (tranny) and 75w90 (diff) (edit: as per SpeedRacer's comments below... the oil I went with is the Redline Synthetic).

This seems to be hard to find locally, so I ordered it from "Tommy" at Rosenthal Mazda. They have great prices, and are really easy to work with.

http://www.finishlineperformance.com/rx8/index.html

The oil is under Maintenance:

http://www.finishlineperformance.com...nce_index.html

I'm sure if you do a search you will find a bunch of advice on shifting. There has been lot's of discussion about it in the past, especially since I know, for a number of 8 owners, the Manual 6 is the first stick they have ever owned.

Let us know how it goes!

Hey, don't forget about the Spring Run up the coast of Maine, a couple of trips to Wide Foot Racing, NE Exotic Car show, several "tech days", and even a couple of track days at Watkins Glen. Last year was fun and this year should be even better. :D

Please don't take this the wrong way but have you tried to match your revs between shifts? Personally I find that the car shifts much smoother if I keep a little bit of pressure on the throttle pedal during a shift. The closer you can match the revs, the less work that the synchros need to do, and the smoother the shift. It takes a little bit of practice but it is worth the effort.

I'd also highly recommend changing the differential and transmission fluids to Redline synthetic. You can definitely feel a difference.

I second SpeedRacer's comments... also the don't rush your shifts... you can shift very quickly, but do it smoothly with constant light pressure, this transmition really doesn't like it when you force it into gear, especially if the revs don't match and the synchros haven't had time to gracefully do that thing they do.

Once you get a perfect shift, you will know it... it just feels really nice going in

How could I forget about that tech day. That day was insane, lets see, what was done that day.

- My 8 got new springs all around
- Speed Racer's 8 got brake lines
- a Miata got cruise control
- my10ae's miata got something done (can't remember what)

I know someone has pics from that day. The driveway was full of beautiful Mazda sports cars being wrenched on. What a beautiful day!

Red 2004, 6sp, GT, appearance, spoiler, nav. I live in Brighton and work in Cambridge.

Was anyone here in a silver, heading south on 93 a weekend or two ago? We trailed each other for a little bit... its nice to see the 8 in motion on the highway

I too will be at Devens a lot on the weekends, NER, NESCC, and BMWCCA autocrosses this spring/summer/fall, look for me floundering around in the novice classes

I know Imp is a certified cone-killer, any other 8s in the area interested in participating in the first autoX on april 17th? Maybe we could caravan up and 'represent' as it were. I'm planning on leaving Brighton at 6:30am or so to get a quick breakfast and be at Devens near 7:30.

Where in mass are you coming from?

I'm just about 20 mins up I-91 from south winsor, but driving down indirectly doesn't bother me a bit...anything for an excuse to "exercise" my zoom zoom... :D
