It was fun yesterday Ryan. Can't wait to see the final pics. How was the ride? Did it feel any stiffer than stock?

hey guys..I'm new to STL, and my car wont start today (04, auto). Had AAA out to look at it and they said it's definitely not my battery since it has enough juice.

I have no idea what to do or where to go, any advice?

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about the car.

Does the engine turn when you try to start it?

Do you know if all recalls and TSBs have been performed on the car? My guess would be that you're probably using the old starter. It might not be powerful enough to start a VERY cold or possibly flooded engine. Other than this, I would suspect the ignition system might need a tune-up. (replace plugs, and maybe coils)

If your car is under warranty, the best thing to do would be to take it to a dealership to have them diagnose (and hopefully fix) the problem.

Hey! thanks so much

It cranks but nothing happens, when i stop turning the key it makes this winding noise sort of like a kazoo (lol remember those?) or the Jetsons space ship. It's not doing anything it did the time that it was flooded, so I don't think thats the problem. The lights aren't dimming or anything of the like.

I'm not sure if the recalls have been performed on her. Should I just have her towed to a Mazda dealership? Any idea what the costs of a new starter, plugs and coils might be?

I have no idea if she's under warranty still, but I doubt it, I got her used in May....and of course school starts tomorrow and my car won't work.

I don't think I've ever heard a kazoo noise after an attempted start; very strange! I would definitely have it checked out by a dealership and see what they say.

Firstly, sign up for a free account @ www.mymazda.com . You should be able to input your car's VIN and it will tell you any recalls the car is missing. If there are any missing, check with the dealership about warranty information and if they could possibly perform the recalls.

The dealership should be able to tell whether the starter currently on the car is the new or old model. They will probably charge upwards close to $400 for a new starter; I do not know about installation.

Plugs and coils will be a rip-off at a local dealership. There are various websites you can order them from. One I particularly like is actually a dealership in Arlington, VA - www.finishlineperformance.com . For a good deal on plugs, don't expect to pay more than $100 for a set of four plugs; for coils, about $120-150 for a set of four.

EDIT: Worst case scenario -- the engine has lost too much compression. A compression test on the engine will determine if this is the case, however this may be the last thing the dealership might test. What is the mileage on the engine? If it is under 100k miles and they determine it fails the compression test, you should be able to have it replaced as Mazda extended the core engine warranty to 8 years / 100k miles (okay, not so much "worst case", but you will be out the car for a while).

Even if the engine is replaced after having performed the previous troubleshooting steps, you should consider the upgrading of the starter / coils / plugs as preventative maintenance for the new engine.

I hope things work out for you and the car!

Thanks so much for the greatntips, I'll go and sign my car up right now...ugh, just what i need to waste approximately $1,000 on lol.

My mileage is around 33,000.

I guess I'll have to have to towed tomorrow then, looks like no college classes for me. boo.
