Need a new engine/rebuild in the Chicago area..

Well, it's finally time. My RX-8 is going to need either a FULL rebuild or a reman installed. I wish I could find someone locally to do it, as I have a time frame in which I need it installed and can't wait a month or more. Anyone in the Chicago area with experience in rebuilding these and pulling/installing the engines?

PS: I've got the 4 port 2004 Automatic.

You could try A-Spec in Schaumburg. They are the only rotary shop that I know of. Then there is Shook Motorsports in Rockford. He is a sponsor of our local rotary club EvolvChicago.org.

Of course, a Mazda dealer can do it. The rebuilt engine, installed, will be about $5000. Again, the local club is sponsored by Naperville Mazda. If you mention EvolvChicago to the service people, you may get a discount of some sort. I know we do on parts we purchase.

You live in Dupage too, eh? I live right across St Andrews Golf Course.. I always see this yellow RX-8 when taking 59 to 64. I've always wondered if that was you.. Not a lot of running 8's in dupage these days..

Back on topic..

Contacted A-Spec and no call back from their place.. I'm stuck between a rock & a hard place right now. Mechanic I took it to wants it gone from his lot in the next couple days.

I'm further east, Villa Park. Go into my profile and you can see the pictures of my car. It's black. I do work for BP intermittantly, so I do get on 59. Just a little further south.

It's not running at all,eh. My engine runs. The car just needs work to make it road worthy again.

Ahh, I see. I've only seen around 3 RX8'S around my area, none really like to drive them in the winter though.

My engine does run, but it leaks oil MASSIVELY when running. I believe it's the seals causing the engine oil to leak everywhere, it also stalls out. It never used to be like this, it actually gave out on me when I was installing new ignition parts. Took the darn thing out for a test drive and stalled right in the middle of an intersection on 59.. I take this car to Wilmot Mountain ( No clue if you know where that is ) very frequently since I work there. So I've got some miles on it now. Sorry to hear about your 8!

Does it just leak oil or does it blow smoke. The lines that go to the oil cooler (one cooler in your case) have a tendency to corrode and leak. I had to replace them on my car (6 spd manual). The cost to have them replaced would have been $1500. I got some used lines from a part out car for under $150.
I've never skied Wilmont. I have skied Villa Olivia, Devils Head, Cascade & Granite Peak.

It leaks MASSIVE amounts of oil near the transmission area, when the cars running it sounds like a bogging snowmobile. I know that's a VERY harsh way to put it.. but it sounds extremely rough, deep & shakes when you turn. It takes a long time to crank over & start. I finally contacted Ryan..

Oh, a fellow skier. ^_^ I usually ski Wilmot, Alpine, Cascade, Four Lakes, Villa Olivia & Devils head.

I haven't heard of Red Mist. If you decide to use them, let me know how it turns out.

You should come to Wilmot sometime, we got another week left in the ski season!

I'm probably going to go with Ryan & a reman engine install, after I get the new engine installed I'll install a Sohn OMP mod or whatever it's called. That way I can inject FRESH 2 stroke into the engine instead of the dirty crankcase oil.

It's been around 41 days since I haven't driven my RX-8, Ryan Shook was sent the check quite a while ago. The engine was received last week Monday, he said he can't install it for another week due to space issues. Or at least that's what he said... This guy is VERY slow...

I've had my engine replaced 3 times (under warranty). It took a month to get rebuilds from Mazda for my car. Then 2-7 days before the install was completed. This was at the Mazda dealer. It takes a full 8 hrs to replace the engine. The extended engine warranty didn't offer a loaner vehicle, so I was sharing my son's car to get to work (he worked nights at UPS).
I haven't talked to Ryan since last August. He is the only guy working in his shop and probably has several project he's juggling.
Good Luck

My bad, I guess I got a little angry due to the lack of constant phone calls. The car is FINALLY towed out to his shop, he plans to do the install over the weekend.
