NASA HPDE July 7-9 @ Mid-Ohio

Here are the details: https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_e.../?event_id=318

You can do 1,2 or all 3 days. I'm going to shoot for Friday, the 7th. HPDE1, as I'm a track virgin. I think some of my Columbus bretheren will join me.

Any other takers? I have no affiliation with NASA, Mid-Ohio, blah, blah, blah.

I was planning to go since I went last year and only got limited running because of rain during the first day. How come you're only going for one day?

How come you're only going for one day?
Good question. The other folks from Columbus that will probably come only have that time available. For me, I'd like to take this one day and then evaluate the experience to see how far I want to take it. It's something I have wanted to do for a long time, but maybe it won't meet my expectations. Who knows?

That's the problem! With 2 kids still in school, it's not the most sane thing I've done, but I was never known for my sanity! The interesting part is, I thought my wife would be opposed, but quite the opposite! She saw a brief shot on tv of somebody on a track and said, "I wanna do that." Ok, you just have to put a roll bar in your Miata and you're all set. "I'll just take your car."

Check out the link. Basically $150 per day, guaranteed at least 4 20 minute runs.

how was it? what kind of drivers/cars are out there, are we talking novices or experts or somewhere inbetween? reading the website it makes it sound like the weekend is actual racing instead of instructional, is that the case?

ive been to road america a few years back and would consider myself a pretty good driver (my dad is an scca instructor, so i got a bit above average training) so i could fall anywhere inbetween group 1-3 depending on the caliber of people out there, whats your experience and what did you run in?

Mid-Ohio was the first time I had gone with the NASA group. My experiences are with the BMW CCA clubs. By comparison, the NASA group is less formal or structured in most ways but more strict in others. They seemed to really hold to having to wear long sleeve shirts, but I found them a little quick to sign-off people to run on your own.
The instruction was OK, nothing more. (It was a little amusing since my instructor was a rather large guy and found it difficult to get into the car). I liked my instructor and I guess he felt I wouldn't kill myself so he signed me off. I felt there was more to learn with regards to the line and the "personality" of Mid-Ohio so I thought the sign-off was a little early. He did say that I freaked him a little. When looking back I guess I did since the first 2 sessions were in the wet where I had pretty much tried learning the line and putted around. After lunch ithe track dried out, I slapped on the R's and at the first corner after the back straight, I went to brake deeper by comparison. I didn't overshoot the corner or missed the braking point (not even close)...but from his view, I had gone a lot further.....I apologized for it. He said it was OK and chuckled too about.

It sounds like you probably would be signed off pretty quickly. The groups (1-3)followed the "pass only when indicated" quite well. Everyone behaved. Only the most experienced group was allowed to pass without needing to signal. They too behaved well. It was far from "racing". If you are concerned about this, my experience would say that you have nothing to worry about.
Maybe I'll see you there....

When I applied, I did it all on-line including receiving a membership number via email, etc...so I'm not sure what you did different or whether they even offer the same kind of capability?

Fellas,

My ticket is being put on hold. I've been told that I have to be in emergancy surgery 6/27 for an over active adrenal gland. It's pumping to much adrenaline into my body therefore causing my heart to race and blood pressure to shoot up. I'm not sure how long I'll be out of commission but I'll hopefully get back soon.

Good luck up there, have fun and be safe!!!

Anthony,

Our thoughts are with you - good luck. There is another of these events again at Mid-Ohio in August, so hopefully you are up to it then. Keep us posted on your progress.
