I like when there is some snow. The feeling of the tail coming out is ecstasy^2 :p

I'm seriously considering skip barber at CA though. They have 8s there and I think I'll be learning a lot, but it's not cheap... sigh.

WOW I just checked out their website. I guess I don't have any experience with pricing out driving schools but that is more expensive than I thought it would be.

The starter looks pretty easy to do yourself as long as you can get under the car, just make sure you get the upgraded version. Like I said in your other thread, the only body shop I have experience with is Classic Collision in Novi. I know it's kind of far for you but that's the only one I can recommend. Hopefully other people here will be able to give you more insight.

Since you already have an RX-8, why not save the car rental and airfare and attend an autocross or track day school with your own car? It's almost the season.

Thanks for the input! I do plan to autox and track but I was primarily interested in some drifting also.

Are there any recommended beginner tracks?

I don't know anything about drifting, but for autocross instruction I'd check this out. There's three of us RX8 owners that autocross regularly, and a couple that show up to a few events a year.

For open track days, it's tougher to find a school. Most groups have a "beginner" run group where the expert group drivers ride along and give pointers. Check with the event organizer to see if instruction is available.

There are three Michigan tracks:

Gingerman (posted in the video above) is in South Haven. It's arguably the safest of the three - plenty of runoff room, and minimal elevation changes.

Grattan is in Belding. It's higher in speed and has some elevation changes that make it challenging, but also a bit more dicey for newer drivers.

Waterford Hills is in Clarkston. It's the shortest of the three, and the most technical IMHO. It's also got two corners that are not particularly friendly to newer drivers. Here's an autocross lap of it from last year:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8y7cKJU8H8

The turn that has the slalom before it in the video at full speed is nerve wracking, and the last turn is deceptive and has been known to eat cars.

Mid Ohio is also pretty close, but I haven't made it down there yet so I can't comment on it.

If I were you, I'd start out by attending an autocross. Your car is likely ready to go, it's cheap, and it's low risk. All the skills you learn from it transfer to roadcourse or likely drifting as well (see my avatar.) Plus, you can get RX8 specific pointers and even ride alongs from the Detroit rotary posse. PM me or keep an eye on myautoevents.com, schedules should be going up pretty soon.

then they can't decide where they want his hands above his head or to his side. Nervous people behind a gun is a bad deal.

I had Aranda's ( W. Vernor & Drogoon) fix a rim (20" Dayon) of mine years ago and they did a great job. I would sure hope there is a closer place to you though.

A friend just had Aranda's remove and remount two tires from some 22" rims. They did a good job on rims everyone else was scared of, but they aren't cheap. $25 off for each tire and $25 each to remount . . . we assumed they balanced on the remount, but they didn't and they didn't bother telling us that they didn't balance. Not real great on customer service/communication.
