Evolv-Chicago Meets HERE...
#3329
Hey so I guess I'm officially in the club now.
I'm hoping to be able to come to the meet today and actually get to meet you guys even though I lurk more than I post here.
I have a couple of questions though, I just got my rx-8 a week ago and its my first rear wheel drive car, so what do I need to do to prepare myself for the crazy Chicago weather? I was looking at some Pirelli winter tires for 150 each. Are there any deals out there maybe around black friday?
And also I've been wondering what do the IL state laws say about requiring a license plate on the front?

I'm not sure how others learn, but after it snows go to an open parking lot and get used to the car. Kick the back end out, do a few donuts, etc. It will give you a better feeling of how far you can push it and how to control it on the roads.
As mac11 said, they require it. whther you want to put it on or not is totally up to you though.

i have the same blizzacks as aero8, and they are good, but they do get greasy in warm weather, make sure you dont use them at the track. they will wear faster in warm weather too

I'll snap his neck.
I use all-seasons. However, I do not use the car to commute. If it is really bad, I usually can just stay home. Have you driven rear wheel drive in the snow before? That can make a big difference in your comfort level. The first car I drove in the snow was a 1977 oldsmobile delta 98 on bald tires. After that, just about anything feels glued to the road I also drove a rwd S-10 for several winters.
That said, mac is absolutely correct - get the summer tires off of there and get all-seasons or snow tires. I got the extra siping done on my all-seasons by discount tires. Supposed to help with wet and snow traction.

FYI - I think I'm going to make it tonight, but there's a chance I might not. Just wanted to let everybody know as I know everyone plans their social lives around mine.

Just bought an RX8 today!...
I was also curious about the snow tire issue... I was wondering if anyone knew of a good cheaper rim for use with snow tires and 17 or 18 was better etc

Check out craigslist for cheap wheels. You need a 5 x 114.3 (4.5") with an offset of +40-50. 17's will save you money. You need snow tires asap. I'm interested to hear how the all seasons fare in any significant depth.

Try to stick to the OEM size. You will be able to get through the snow better.
This is a topic not related to our meets. This should be discussed in the Chicago Lounge or in one of the many other snow threads.
