Yo Chicago. Hopefully some of you guys still check this thing. So, my wife and I are possibly moving to the area in a few months. She has an interview at Rosalind Franklin this week and we'll be looking around at apartments and what not while we are there. Any advice on what areas to avoid at all costs?

Hello, welcome to the area. This is my opinion, but avoid the city and Cook County. The reason is taxes. It used to be the collar counties had the higher real estate taxes. Now it's Cook County. Plus they have the highest sales taxes in the country. If you are getting an apartment, real estate taxes affect you too. The landlord has to pay them and passes that on to the leaser (you). Will, DuPage & Lake Counties (the "Collar Counties") are all pretty nice areas. If your work takes you into Chicago's Loop, the Metra commuter trains (www.metrarail.com) are a great & cheaper way to get there. Bensenville & eastern Elk Grove Village you will want to avoid due to expansion of O'Hare airport and associated future (and present) noise.

Most of the Chicago people have moved to the new local website/club site. Click on the logo in my sig for a link.

Great, thanks for the advice. I saw the links to the Chicago site. I've been on the fence about signing up since we don't actually know if we will be moving there or not just yet. Will know soon though, hopefully hahaha.

I hadn't heard of Rosalind Franklin before and looked it up. It seem that is in North Chicago and Lake County. We have a few members up there that could get together for a mini-meet if you wished. This coming weekend we are having a meet at the local drive-in theater. Later in the month is our "Spring Fling" Meet & Cruise.

We'll only be there for a day (Wed) so don't worry about putting together a meet. Thanks for the offer though. If she gets accepted, we'll have to come back for a longer stay to get some stuff done before move. Maybe then would be a good time for an impromptu meet.

Yeah, it looks like we'll be in Lake county (had to look it up also after reading your earlier post). I'm not sure what my work situation will be, but there is a good chance it would be in the city. How bad of a hike is it from Lake county? Looks like there is a Metra line that runs through N Chicago to the city. Might not be so bad.

As already mentioned there are a few members living in the area (I'm one). I live in Highland Park (10-15 min south), but I work right next door to Rosalind Franklin. If you are moving this way, we should be able to at least help you eliminate some areas so that you can focus on finding the right neighborhood. BTW there was 4 inches of snow on the ground THIS morning. The weather here takes some getting use to.

Hahaha it's funny you mention snow. My wife and I just, this morning, checked out the weather for the time we will be there and it's not looking so good. Rain, snow, general crappyness. It's nice and 70 degrees in NC. Sounds like a whole lot of burrr going on up there.

We are open to any neighborhood suggestions you guys have. We'd be bringing three cars and a baby, so quiet is high on the priority list.

Snow this close to April isn't usual. But, can happen. Last weekend we were in the 50's. You can't go by long range forcasts. Anything more than 3 days out, this time of year, is a crap shoot.

A friend of mine is looking for a place in that area as he works in Waukegan and was finding good prices in the Round Lake/ Volo areas off of 120. That may be a bit too far west for you though. I will check with him and see what else he found.

On a side note, I just started looking at Rosalind Franklin for grad school...Can you let me know what you or your wife think about the school if you wander around at all before or after the interview?

Good luck to her on her interview!

You're better off using the Great Lakes station since it's practically around the corner and down the street from RF. The parking lot is next to a sentry for the recruit part of naval base so it's somewhat monitored.

Welcome to the area, hope you enjoy your stay.

...and Adult Swim/Williams Street is the shiz

Thanks for the tips and I'll post our thoughts on the school once we are back.

Thanks for the heads up on the station. Do you happen to know how long (timewise) the ride is from there to the city?

If you go to that link I gave you (www.metrarail.com) you can get the schedule. It will tell you how long it takes. The amount of time depends on the number of stops and freight train interference.

? for you city folk

I was parked on the street overnight in hyde park and this morning i got a ticket for not having a front plate.

How big of a deal is this to pay off right away? It's only $50 and it's my first parking ticket with this car. Like most of us, I hate using the front plate bracket and I know that I would still be ticketed if my plate was on my dash. On the envelope it stated that by the 3rd ticket I guess they're entitled to boot or impound.

Of course, first thing I did morning was a search on alternative plate mounting. But for now I guess I have to mount the damn thing every time I head down to the city.

there is a way around this...

hit me up and I will explain....basically writing a letter and contesting this.

if you dont pay it for about 30 days or less it will double

We're back home. Thanks for the advice from everyone. We visited Waukegan (didn't really like any properties we saw there), North Chicago (only really a step above Waukegan from what we saw), Zion, and Lake Bluff. Overall, it was nice. The weather was bad only one day. The other two days exceeded our expectations.

The school is small from what I could see (I only saw the outside). Only one long 3 (plus basement) story building and two student housing buildings. They took a tour. She really liked it. It seemed like a fairly quiet area. The Pathology program is a little over a year long with 10 months of additional clinicals. The professors she met with were very open and cordial. Now we are in wait mode, hoping for the best.
