After talking with DariusDemon, he suggested replacing the entire exhaust system. After doing a quick search (I'm at work) the price deffinitely seems to be better for an entire aftermarket exhaust vs the cat from the dealership. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for? ex. brand, type, specifications..

I dont really know anything about this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks once again to you all!

It depends on what kind of sound you are looking for. There's a bunch out there now. try looking on youtube for vids of different exhausts. The greddy sp2 is one of the quieter ones around I know, borla's one of the loudest.

Any performance difference between manufacturers, or are they all about the same? Does it really boil down to just a sound difference for your money?

Hey everyone I'm sorry if I am beginning to sound like a broken record always asking for help, but I am confused about the catalytic converter problem I have been having.

Recap: I need a new Catalytic Converter. The OEM one from the dealer is $1400. I was under the assumption that I could buy a new aftermarket exhaust system and they come with a new catalytic converter. I believe I was wrong in that assumption. I was looking at getting the Borla cat back system but I noticed that it connects at the catalytic converter and does not come with one.

My question is do I need to get a replacement catalytic converter? If I were to buy an aftermarket exhaust system, are there any that come with the catalytic converter or a similar pipe that replaces the catalytic converter? I read all through the Exhausts page and there wasn't any info on what I need. I know there are a couple of people on the Utah board that have aftermarket exhausts and I was hoping I could find some answers from you.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! You guys are awesome and I appreciate all the help you have given me.

PS Xiphoid, if it turns out I do need a catalytic converter, I will probably take you up on that.

You can hollow it out and it will work but you need to keep your resinator on for back pressure the rotory needs back pressure

After spending all day reading different posts I figured out that I should get a high flow cat. I noticed from the signatures that bose and Xiphoid have Rotary Performance cats. How are these working for you? Do you have any problems passing emissions? That is my biggest concern purchasing this.

I guess there is also one available from rx7store.net. If anyone here has this or has experience with it, please let me know what you think of it!

Most after market exhausts you see being sold are 'cat-back' exhaust, which do not include a cat pipe, you would have to buy a seperate 'cat, or race pipe' as some companies call it. I have the Rp as you noticed, I haven't had to do emissions testing so not sure, but I haven't had a check engine light related to it so as far as I can tell it does it's job. With High flow cats you should have no problem.

Shouldn't your cat be covered under the emissions warranty? I thought it was and 80,000 mi. thing, not sure but I would look into it.

Thank you so much for the info bose. You are correct about the warranty being 80000 miles, however my car has 88000, so i just missed it. where did you get the RP high flow cat? I checked on the Rotary Performance website and it only has the Super Cat Midpipe. Is this the same as yours? Do they make it still? I guess there is also a high flow cat on rx7store.net, but I didn't know how the quality was on that one.

Ah I see, I actually bought mine used, but he got it from rx7store.com. The one they sell is the RP supercat, they have revised it a bit but all in all it's the same but improved. So weather you go through rx7store or rotary performance it's the same one just get the one that's cheaper.

And don't worry about the questions. That's what this place is for

I got mine last night, I wonder if this means they never fully voided my warranty? Not sure what this means for me but it's still very cool of MNAO to extend a hand to us Rotarians.

It applies to every RX-8 made to date, regardless if you bought it new or used.

The packet contains a form for getting reimbursed for engine core expenses already spent, and an outline of the warranty extension. That's the really nice thing about this extension- if you've already spent money on core repairs (and kept your receipts), you will get reimbursed by Mazda.

Even if you didn't get a packet in the mail, your 8 should still be covered.

The packet is sent from Mazda corporate offices, not the dealers.

Hey rx8snowboard. Im pretty sure I have driven by you a couple of times. I live really close to you: 11400 S 1300 E. I would totally be down for a ride this weekend. Got nothing else going on.

I did end up ordering the RP high flow cat. I am hoping to have it in the next day or two. I am a car noob, but I really want to install this myself (more of a self accomplishment thing.) Has anyone done this before and could give me some pointers or help? I read that it was a fairly simple bolt on part, but I am not sure.

Also with my 8 having 80k+ miles on it and having recently bought it (not knowing how well it was kept,) I was wondering if I should take it to a dealer and have them do a tune up on it. Does this sound like a good thing to do?
