Upgrade your Greddy Turbo Kit

The stock Greddy Turbo Kit for the RX-8 utilizes a foam filter element directly above the engine cooling fans and under extreme conditions the air entering the filter can be in excess of 200+ degrees Fahrenheit. Once the air is compressed by the turbocharger additional heat is added to the charge air reducing power and increasing chances of costly detonation. Mazsport has addressed this problem by designing the Mazsport Cold Air Intake for the Greddy Turbo. Our kit replaces the Greddy filter element with a large K&N filter in a location where temperatures will usually be 80 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit lower depending on ambient temperatures. The colder intake charge provides more power and reduces stress on engine internals and seals by lowering chances of detonation. This will also lower engine operating temperatures, increase air conditioning efficiency by reducing Intercooler temperature and reducing underhood heat soak.

Can you post a pic of how this sits on the car, with the bumper off. I would be curious to know where that intake ends up sitting, and how it works with the current greddy piping.

Any thought of doing plastic or titanium to keep heat transfer down?

 

I would think that a Ti intake would be nice penny.

 

whoa, this sounds awesome for you turbo guys! mysqul, make sure to get this and report back those temps, that would be cool to see.

 

On a naturally aspirated 8 on a 100 degree day after driving at least 50 miles and then sitting for a half hour we were able to see a 30 degree difference (scanalyzer reading the IAT with the stock intake (cai) and the Racing Beat Ram Air Duct modded to the stock air box. So that being said the air lower not under the bumper but in front fresh air is going to have a lower temp if the car is hot.

Scott, Im interested in that. i meant to call you about a new turbo install, i am going to have to wait till this summer, i ended up getting my car painted this winter instead.

sounds like you're describing the rb ram air intake

 

The RB duct doesn't work so well with an intercooler down there.

 

I believe it was 1-2 hp for every degree of air temperture based upon a Thermal manufacturer.

You don't increase HP, you just don't loose it when it's hot.

So my guess is anywhere from 5 to 15 RWP saved. Does that sound correct?

I had always heard 1% change in HP per 10 degrees F change in IAT. If you look at the ratios of temperatures in absolute and figure that there is more or less a direct correlation to density change, 1% sounds reasonable. For a 40 degree drop in intake temp on a greddy turbo'ed car, that might equate to 10 hp. That's a more reasonable guess than 40-80. Again, though, it's just a guess. 10 hp would be a lot for a cold air intake, but so is a 40 degree drop in air temp at the TB. If you take in air that is 40 degrees colder, it won't still be a full 40 degree difference at the TB.

So......... 2 to 4 hp saved or 4 to 5 hp saved.

I think it's worth it to drop the air tempertures, if you can.

 

Colder charge temps also provide a slight margin of safety against knock/ping/detonation. I should think on an aftermarket turbo kit, every safeguard you can get while not giving up the power is also desirable. I can't really speak on how much of a difference this can make in that respect.

It looks like it will sit at about the same spot as the type 1 turbo intake right? What are you using to hold the pipe where it goes through the front frame inside the bumper?

 

there is a mounting bracket that attaches and supports the intake.....

 

this basically looks like my AEM..... i suppose its the same concept? what size is the piping? any pics installed on a car?

 

it is 3 inch piping....stainless and ceramic coated in the picture. we sell it in munimula as well
