Steve -
I realize you are a young guy, but after you drive those roads from 9A to 5:30 or 6P, your butt may be draggin and it might just be that sitting down and letting someone serve you might be the ticket. The J-O Ranch Steakhouse is pretty awesome and they have a separate area where we can eat.
But then again that is just an old guys opinion.

Do you know how many people they can hold in that seperate area?

BTW, that highlighted route goes near Garner State Park and Lost Maples State Natual Area, both of which might make for a nice scenic drive and/or a good spot to stop for a box lunch.
I am not sure if there is any sort of park entrance fee, though.

Steve, mark me and Lindsay down.
Dallas folks... yall planning on leaving after work Friday, or taking Friday off?
I guess technically, Ft. Worth & Dallas folk could meet at 67 & 35W (more entertaining drive if you don't go down 35 - my dad lives in Fredericksburg, so I am quite familiar with that drive)

I am still going to go to work that friday. I could get off a little bit earlier though. I would like to meet up with the DFW folks though and drive down there together, what time would be best to meet up?

Is that a bike rack?

For anyone that likes back roads more than 35, I hate 35 (too much traffic and too many cops) this is the route i take to San Antonio.

It's a much more pleasant drive and when you are on 67s there are actually a couple of pretty fun turns. Same goes for 16, as you approach Kerville.

Best place would be for Dallas folks to meet up with Ft. Worth folks at 67 & 35W. There's a McDonalds on the NE corner if I recall correctly.
The path Lord ET posted is a good one that I normally use.
For the return trip, when there's a bit more driving time, we could always got a little out of the way to hit a few more good roads. This path takes us on 2323, one of my preferred roads in the area. (map)

If I work that Friday instead of taking it off, then the earliest I could get there would be 530-6, depending on traffic through Dallas. That's just speaking for myself though.

Leaving Cleburn at 6 is going to make for a late night indeed. And as you near the hill country deer get very numerous and are very very stupid. If I have a choice I'll leave probably at most by 3 or 4. (from cleburn) I've had collisions with deer several times around Kerville/Boerne area and I really hate hvaing to be vigilant for 3+ hours.(dusk & night)
This is also something to consider. If you leave late, 6pm or later, I'd probably take 35. Less traffic (at night), faster, and less deer. If you take 35, you can still cut over at 90 and hit 281, but that takes you just past Johnson city.

I think that as long as we leave Alvarado/Cleburn by about 3 we should be good. It takes roughly 2.5 hours to get to 281 (Lampasas)from 35/67 intersection. And from there it usually only takes about 2 hours to get to Boerne. So it may take 2.5-3 hours to get to Kerville from there. This is all of course not super-speeding ie.75-80mph
That way you only have to really keep your eyes open for deer for a little bit instead of for a lot a bit
