Unhappy Radiator Light?

Posting this here due to the relevance of the geographic area.

Ok, so I work in D and live in FW, I was boogying down 30 last night, and for a good stretch I was doing more than 100 or so, when I noticed my radiator light come on. At first I kind of freaked out and checked all my gauges. Everything within normal limits, ¼ tank of fuel left, temp needle just below the middle, oil pressure just above the middle. So, I back out of it and get ready to park on the access road. As soon as my speed comes below 100, the light shuts off. I start cruising about 80, and it didn’t come back. Gauges didn’t move from their normal ranges… I know it was 102 ۫۫ F yesterday, but my temp never came up. Any ideas?

Is it the light that looks sort of like a radiator?

If so check your manual, it is not the radiator light.

please dont write me off for uninformed. I checked my over fill last night when I got it home. It was showing about 3/4 full of clean green 50/50 on the dip.

manual says the light is a low coolant fluid level. Was wondering if its a bad sensor or if its something worthy of having it locked up at the dealer for the week.

During the 40 mile trip the light was on for about 1 mile, and came on roughly 90-120 secconds after leveling off from moderate acceleration back to 100mph.

thanks for the response though. just concerned about the car. Besides the down payment, I havent even made a first regular payment on the thing, and the driver visor broke a week ago. Just nervous as to "what's next"

Looks like a fairly common problem: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...radiator+light

Only time I've had it come on is when I was actually low on coolant. I'd guess at a sustained speed like that the evap might have set off the low indicator.. or it could be just a sensor malfunction..

If you're sure coolant levels are fine I wouldn't worry about it but you might try to replicate the problem and see if it's repeatable.

FYI: The temp and oil gauges are 'dummy gauges' as in they're always showing the same level unless something is drastically wrong. One of my primary complaints about the Rx8 is still the lack of a real oil pressure gauge.

yeah, even my old firebird has actual factory preassure, electrical and temp gauges. it started to show around 180k mi when sludge was showing up on the bird. the oil gauge would peg out under light acceleration until it warmed up. then it almost bottoms out. ... that or there is something else going on, but its been doing that now for 25k more miles, without major failures.

How is it that this happened on 30 relevant vs it happening anywhere?

the gauges in the car are worthless. don't count on the coolant reading telling you anything other than your car has already overheated and you need to buy a new engine.

04 rx8 41kmi loaded blue GT 6speed 3rd owner
95 firebird 225kmi base power-nothing 2nd owner
86 prelude 200kmi average equipped unknown owner

until i finish the note on the `8 i wont have much cash to do a whole lot. i'm trying to pay off a 15k note in 1.5 years and my first payment is comming up this weekend.

I asked this in the gulf coast region because 30 is a relative interstate for north texas so I figure you guys would understand the outside heat thing and if it had any relevance to the odd rad light occurance. outside that and my driver sun visor failing, I havent had THAT many problems with the car. a few things I'm curious about, but not much... Rattles when I drive down brick roads... whine in idle with clutch out in neutral until it warms up... trans feels unusually tight...

i dunno

lol, not every.. well I take that back, there is a HOV lane that I do at least 90 on every morning, in the evening its closed, but I rarely drive sub 80 on the freeways. makes that 40 mile commute take 25 minutes including city driving.
