So did the law change or didn't...?

I'm assuming that it hasn't. Blonde lady cop pulled me over a few months back and gave me a ticket for not having it on.

Texas is a little slow though. Front license plate requirement has to go, and for god's sake, enough with the cell phones in one hand and makeup in the other.

Its about time they change that stupid law. i got pulled over once a long time ago for not having a front plate on my Honda. it was a sunday morning driving out through the country and i think that the cop had nothing better to do that morning. i ended up talking my way out of it though and he just gave me a ticket.

anyway, that was the first thing i did to my 8 was to take the from bracket off. i think that it makes the car look so much better. and have any of you noticed that a lot of the newer cars dont even have a place to mount the plate on the front?

I think just the opposite, many new cars have a hole in the bumper molded in to mount the front license plate. I think if you have a honda or some rice car you're more likely to get the ticket for no front plate. I replaced the front bumper strip to a Euro one on my M3 and no cops ever hassled me about it, probably just thought that's the way BMW's were. There are no obvious gaping holes in the front bumper of the RX8 either so that helps.

yeah I have yet to ever get hassled for no front plate. I took the bracket off a week after I bought my RX8. Even when you are looking at it - you cant tell there is "supposed" to be a front plate there. If i ever do get pulled over for not having it, I will play stupid and just say it came like that.

"knocks on wood". But I have yet to have a problem with cops about my absence of a front plate. My wife however did get a ticket for it in her car. Funny thing is that it was the very first ticket she ever got for anything.

They've been trying this for years and it hasn't worked yet. It's even been in front of the Texas senate and still didn't change. Don't get your hopes up. The front plates will be around for a long time to come.

I wouldn't blame it on the Governor. The front plate issue was added into unrelated legislation (school finance, or teacher's insurance or something) and stayed in until the final mark-up by a conference commttee in the wee hours of the last day of our bi-ennial session. God knows why, but it got trash-canned at that point.

The petition process did work!! There is still hope for democracy, R.G.

As someone who lives in a state requiring a front plate, what's the reasoning behind having it again?

Brother is a Texas cop...so basically they keep it because they can run your plate numbers from the front while they are sitting across from you at an intersection, etc.

He and many of the other cops that I know (all over Texas) don't really care too much about the law. It doesn't really help them anyway since most of the time they clock you from the front as you go by, then get behind you and run your plates/stickers, sit behind you at an intersection and run your plates/stickers, or drive behind you and run your plates/stickers. Very seldom do they get the chance to run plates from the front anyway. From what I understand after talking to him and all of his friends is that the only officers that like to enforce the law are the small town cops just looking for the revenue of any ticket that they can give and highway patrol officers just because they are cocky enough to give you a ticket for not having a front plate without any other offense.

He did say that they were trying to get rid of the law a couple of years ago and it must have been a close run because most of the policemen that I know thought it would pass, but it did not.

I am waiting patiently also, but I will let you know if anything changes as I will hope that I am one of the first to hear about it!!

Online petitions have no bearing on law.

If you've ever seen how legislature works, you'll know that unless you are working with a lobbyist/special interest group you'll never know when bills will be brought up in legislature - it's one big clusterfuck. They don't have time limits, so you can only guess based on an unattainable docket when a certain issue will be discussed.

It follows that you can never support or attack an initiative without the special interest group, so go find someone that hates the front plate law.

You could always go visit the governors website and offer suggestions and that. I wrote something one time and got all kinds of mail about it until they made their point. It was neat in a way...

Angry Are you serious?

Got my 1st ticket for no front license plate on my yellow 04" RX8 "Lola" this weekend. Does the Selma Police department have nothing better to do than give shitty *** tickets for a freaking missing license plate?

I'm a super, super happy RX8 owner of 3 months. This car was been registered in Texas twice and has never had a front license plate. How do I know? I got it from the dealer this way and it doesn't have the mounting brackets for a front plate and doesn't seem to have any indications that there ever was one.

Ok, so here's my ticket:

$98 ticket
$62 misc. fees
$160 TOTAL

Completely outrageous and uncalled for. Oh, did I mention this officer had a trainee in the squad car too? I'm feeling like I was singled out cause of:

1. Yellow RX8
2. No front license plate (BS)
3. Trainee in the car

Now what? I live in a small town and if I don't get it "fixed", I know this Officer will keep tabs and continue to pull me over. So I'm going to be forced to RUIN the look of my beautiful Lola and mount a front plate.....POOR.

Thanks for reading, listening, laughing and feeling my pain..

Yep, I got a front license ticket the same time I got caught speeding. He asked me why I didn't have it on, I told him it came from carmax without the front plastic piece just a spare license plate in the back...

I think he did it because I was on the highway, must've been frustrated because he had too wait too get behind me too do anything...

yea, i kinda feel the same way. I came to a stop and the cop was already across from me. He probably wanted to run my plates but couldn't cause I didn't have one in the front.

On the real, they should get to the real police work and stop getting afta peeps for going 2 or 3 miles ova the speed limit or not having a front license plate on their ride.

still mad, can't you tell?

lol

New Jersey also requires a front plate. I emailed the Governor's office with the save money angle since NJ always seems to be looking for ways to make money and this was the reply I received. I think its a bunch of BS.

Governor Jon S. Corzine has asked me to respond to your inquiry regarding the use of two license
plates in NJ. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify the position of the Motor Vehicle
Commission (MVC) on this issue.

There has been a great deal of research and discussion regarding the benefits of using one
license plate in New Jersey. The current two license plate system is supported by law
enforcement officials at all levels, including the New Jersey State Police, who report that
approximately 84% of automobile identifications are made from the front license plate. The
potential benefit of issuing one license plate to either reduce costs or to generate revenue
would not outweigh the importance to law enforcement of being able to identify vehicles
traveling in both directions.

I appreciate your interest in this matter.

Ok, here's the official Texas Drivers Hanbook rule.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

6. LICENSE PLATES—must have one valid plate at the front and one at the
rear of passenger and commercial vehicles except dealer plates and those
commercial vehicles that are only issued one license plate.

Now, if I read this correctly it doesn't say anything in there about MOUNTING the plate on the front or rear of the car. So does a dashboard resting place sound like it might work?

I got a warning from a Trooper on 75 North of Melissa for no front plate. I think I'm going to break the bracket and throw it in my trunk.
