Moving to Austin... :)
Hi everybody,
Finally a career move I have been planning has materialized. I just got a job today within my company that will be based out of Austin.
I presently live in San Jose, CA and needless to say, I am a car nut! Need to either sell my house here or rent, and move.
Of course, I don't know anybody in Austin. Heck last time I was there was back in 94 in an Engineering College Bowl Tournament, thus the reason for this post.
If you guys can give me some advice about best school districts, houses, safety and the like will be appreciated. I am planning on doing this ASAP since I want to be there before school starts.
Of course, my Rx8 will come with me... One more 8 in the state of Mustangs and I'd love to attend RX8 events, mountain drives, track days, tech days and so on. My previous weekend car was a Turbo Miata with FM ECU that I did all teh work myself.
Thanks and look forward to meeting some of you... Heck I will even stop at PTP to see if I can be persuaded to add this turbo.
In advance I appreciate your input,
Carlos aka "Pololo"

If you own your house in San Jose, you will make out like a bandit here. The geography of the area is East of town is flatter; West is hillier. You don't have to go far out of town to be in the country either. If you want to live "in town", avoid the East side of I-35 in Austin proper. It can be a little sketchy. I don't have any children so I'm not up on all the school districts. I know the district where I live (LHISD) is rated pretty high. There is a lot of road improvement construction going on, and a few areas have had housing prices impacted by the construction.
Where will your office be located?
The Hill Country offers some beautiful twisty driving, but you have to keep alert for critters; mostly deer. If you go to the Rudy's meet you will meet us folks who drive these routes quite a bit.

There's also other sites you can scope out:
www.hillcountrydrives.com - great group of people we go on runs with every month
www.tejasmiata.net - Austin Miata club, they welcome other types of vehicles to their events all the time
www.czot.org - Z club of Austin, also a freidnly group of folks who wlecome other makes/models other than z cars.
you won't find near as many rustangs as you will giant oversized suv's and pickups, and people around here really know how to drive/park them well......not :ugh:

I would recommend Southwest or West Austin for schools, Leander or Cedar Park has a good school district as well. (North West) I wish you safe travels to Austin, hope to see your 8 on the road

Update.
First of all, I was amazed by the number of 8's I saw in Austin!! Actually in 3 days (I was there for a weekend looking for a house) I saw more 8's that I see in the Bay Area in 1 month!! I probably saw about 10 or 12... so my car won't be as unique.. lol lol
I went and drove all over, Round rock, Leander, Cedar park, Plugerville, but I couldn't live with "not having any hills" so I ended up finding a place in NW in the Hill country by Steiner Ranch.
I will be shipping our cars (wife's and mine) in 2 weeks so they get to TX by end of the month.
I am definitely looking forward to meeting some of you guys... Thanks for all the info. Really appreciate this.
