For those living down in the south....How well does the RX8's AC perform in hot weather?

I've been looking at buying an RX8 for some time...but I live in Houston, where stop n go traffic during the summer months (90-100 degrees + high humidity) is pretty much the norm. Some of the reports I've been reading about the weak AC, or AC kicking out at low RPMs has got me worried, especially with the dark interior.

So what are ya'lls experiences? Is the AC adaquate for stop and go traffic on hot days? Or should I expect to take a change of clothes along with me? ;-)

The AC sucks when it's 100+ in Dallas. Just not cold enough even on max cold. At least in my '04. It's adequete the rest of the year.

Yeah, you've gotta keep the revs up for it to do it's job. Not so great in dead traffic, really. On the other hand, if you move up north, it's nice and toasty in the winter.

Look in the Do-it-yourself section. There is a thread on insulating the ac pipes to help. There is also reviews, and commentary on this there.

Personally, I have not done this, but will next summer. Sitting in traffic in 100+ sometimes can be rough depending on circumnstances, but I can remeber instances of me sweating while in my car with the AC on .

Thanks for the imput on the AC guys...and I'll look at the DIY article dmorales mentioned. I'm lucky enough to live (right now) pretty close to the office..so my daily drive won't be that bad even with the traffic. I'll consider myself forewarnded for longer trips though :-).

I think it would be much cooler inside the car if it were a convertible. Mine makes more heat inside than the AC can deal with. I just open up the windows & roof, and don't bother with the AC if I'm moving at all.

I manage in mine quite nice really in South Eastern Florida in the summer. Of course I think window tinting helps a little too. But if you turn it up max and set the thing to blow only in the center and not the floor, it works just fine imho in my 2006.

Yep, tint helps a good bit. I have ceramic tint on mine and it helps, but I would really rather have the windows open if I'm moving.

Heavy humidity, or stop&go traffic will really test the AC. We have suprisingly low humidity (usually) here in the summer. Atlanta was much worse when I lived there.

a sunvisor helps tremendously in the summer as well.

Like everyone else has said, the AC is fine as long as you're not in stopNgo traffic.

I think a lot of cars here though would have issues keeping up when you're stuck in traffic at 5:30 and the sun is beating down on you.

i drove from L.A. to Las Vegas a few years ago in 118 degree weather with no problem. I also have my ac line wrapped up in thermal turbo wrapping, and that helped out alot.. =)

I live in the Great State of Arizona and 120+ degrees is not uncommon in the summer time.
I do drive in stop and go traffic after work and have had no problem keeping the car nice and cool inside. I have 15% tint in the front and 5% in the back doors and rear window. That made a heck of a difference. And my A/C lines are not wrapped, and I have an AT.
Oh and it's a dry heat,,LOL

I am lucky because I have not had any issues with the AC. I zip tied some pipe insulation to my AC lines last Spring, but I'm really not sure if it makes a difference. Get some window tint as that seems to help out.

Also, if you have a dark colored car you are probably going to have more AC issues than those with a light colored car. I have sunlight silver....yea, the cursed color!
