Gas Prices
Bingo! The key is demand from quickly growing countries like China and India. Their usage is rising at an alarming rate. There is NOTHING we can do that can change this. We don't have the price impact that many think we do. We have SOME impact but not much in the grand scheme of things.
Its called investor speculation by the guys on wallstreet raising the price of oil ...gas prices have skyrocketed...we have no one to blame but our own greedy countrymen and ....of course OPEC
Notice how gas prices and oil prices didn't even go up after 9/11...it wasn't until the past two years when investors realized how profitable this all could be
I really wish they would take oil futures off the market, but too many people make too much money on it, so it will never happen.
Just buy a car that doesn't get 15 mpg and you'll be fine
It only costs me $28 bucks to fill up the Miata and I only do it once every week and a half to two weeks which gets me about 260 miles on a tank. Of course working 2.5 miles from home is a good benefit.

I drive about 50,000 miles a year, 2/3 of that on a CX7, 1/3 on the RX8.
91+ octane is mandatory for the CX7. Even then it knocks sometimes, probably due to building some carbon.
Gas will only continue to rise in price, and over the next 5 years those increases will be fast & furious. Everyday more people from overpopulated countries like India and China are dipping their straws in the oil mug to take a drink.
We've managed to extract the majority of the cheap easy oil on the planet. There is still an abundent supply on earth, it just costs more to get - in many cases a LOT more. And we aren't building up that expensive supply as quickly as we probably should as the entire world of consumers are mere junkies to the oil dealers.
From the models I've been seeing somewhere between $4 and $5 a gallon will be the next leveling point in the US and mostly due to ethanol as a substitute. If we take ethanol down the right direction, fuel prices could actually decrease to the equivalent about $2 a gallon.

It's not anywhere close to cheaper -
........you pay for it thru your taxes, the government funds the whole operation, then sells it at a loss.
How often do you see the government doing stupid things with our money?
So, who's more stupid - you or the government?
Therefore realise that anytime the gov. gives a subsidy to encourage you to do something you would not ordinarily do, because it makes no financial sense, - they are paying you to do something STUPID.
