Gas Prices
So... eventhough people claim that if we worry about gas, we shoudn't be driving this car, us Texas people drive a LOT more than ppl of other states.
with premium gas approaching $4 a gallon, and may even go higher to $4.5 or god forbids 5! that equates to $52-65 bucks per fill up.
assuming a modest 1300 miles per month of texas driving, that is 72 gallons of gas per month if we baby it... that equates to $288.8 in gas per month
if we add in even traveling between the texas triangle.. which i am prone to do once every month roud trip, tats another 400 miles or another $88 bucks. totalling $376 ish
what could be a solution to drive that cost down a bit?
(oh, i premix.. don't know if tat helps or screws up mpg)
-cheating on the fuel?? add 89 octane instead of 93??
-go back to 5W20 instead of 5W30? (i am currently using 10w30... maybe i should switch back)
-just buy some junk beater car as dailies and change rx8 to weekend (or off the insurance all together)
- from my past experience on an accord, it seems lowering the car makes highway driving easier... save gas by lowering car? o.O (i do alot of highway driving)

I laugh at the people who suggest we drive less and either walk or take a bike to the grocery store. That won't work here! I live 24 miles from work. These same people would then say work closer to where you live. I can't. There's nowhere close to my house where I can do the same thing. Then they'd say that I should live closer to where I work. I have no desire to live out here and besides, if the goal is to save money, why would I want a new mortgage? They don't make sense. We all don't live in New York City.
The unfortunate news is that anything you do to help save money will probably end up costing you money. I drive a Civic as a daily driver and use the RX-7 solely as a play car. It's cheaper. I used to drive a rotary as a DD but it's too expensive now. If I lived closer to work it would be a different story. My fiancee lives 50 miles away. I drive about 2000 miles per month on average with more than this being a regular occurance.

As long as the dollar grows weaker then gas prices will continue upwards....so I suggest another car for daily driving. One that gets at least 30 mpg.
Maybe a motorcycle, but those are so dangerous...just the thought of someone turning left in front of me is enough to change my mind.

I've been putting 87 or 89 octane in mine for about a year now and I noticed a HUGE difference in gas mileage (for the better) immediately, costs aside. It doesn't make much sense to me other than I guess the rotary has an easier time burning the 87 but either way, gas mileage is better, cost is a bit lower, and car still performs like a dream. I've put in 93 once or twice for my own peace of mind and curiosity, but my mileage drops ridiculously without fail each time and I see no performance difference. So 89. It doesn't cut much but it's a start.

Figures I'd have a Geo the entire time gas prices were around a dollar a gallon...no way will I do it again, I'd rather pay the price for zero cylinders than go back to three!

the economy is in the crapper, the dollar is weak, gas prices sucked before.
The gravy train doesn't go on forever folks... and unless the country changes the direction it's going its only going to get worse. Sorry to turn it into political rant - but everyone in this country bitches about one thing or the other but nobody wants to change the lifestyle they are used to. Current US debt is 9 trillion dollars ... but we as a country still hemorrhage money because we want what we want.
Any suggestion I make is just my opinion - but this country is only going to get worse unless people change their attitudes, minds, and thoughts about how to become a strong nation again.

I'd vote for Toxin. We need someone with a brain running this country. We're already screwed again for the next 4 years.

It's all about entitlements. Destabilizing the region where most of the world's oil is pulled from the ground by invading a Muslim/Arab nation didn't exactly help things either.

On the topic of oil consumption, I heard an intereting figure this morning. America's consumption has actually decreased by 1% (expected rise due to population, etc is 1.5%). So technically, we're using 2.5% less than expected. Unfortunately, emerging countries like China are sucking up more than that difference. In short, it's not just America's dependence on oil, it's the entire world's.

yeah i'm thinking i'm going to buy a motorcycle to help with gas prices like they are... while yes i'm spending money to buy less gass i look at is this way... once the prices goes up it hardly goes down so in the long run having he bike will be cheaper.
as far as putting 87 oct. in the tank, is this suggested?

I'm pretty much stuck with my car and that's fine, better to spend a little more and drive around happy than to save a tiny tidbit and drive around miserable.

Who?? Iraq??? Don't think so.... Regardless, some hard decisions will need to made by all of us who drive to work everyday. Let's hope the auto industry can redirect their thinking and offer more efficient vehicles. If not, then maybe a motorcycle is in the future.
But, my last motorcycle, only got around 38-40 mpg, which isn't seeming like enough!!

Actually I was playing Xbox live the other day with a few guys from the UK and we got on the topic of oil prices (its amazing what you can find to talk about when your shooting each other up). For some reason the fellows I was playing against seamed to think that Americans use too much fuel because we drive needlessly around. I informed them that we for one don't have the same type of public transportation as them. Most of our cities for instance even the store isn't with in walking distance. Even if it was, we lack things like side walks to make the journey safe. So it when on like this for awhile then they began to understand that she shear size of our cities and country for that matter makes not using a car almost impossible. I'm not saying it can't be done I'm just saying that the reason we use them like we do has a lot to do with the way our country is built.
