(DFW) Speeding Ticket Quotas

I got this in an email this afternoon. I don't know how much truth it contains, but it couldn't hurt to let ya'll know.

"Dallas and the state of Texas will launch a 30-day speeding ticket frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers and Dallas Police officers overtime. There will be 50 police officers and state troopers in the Metroplex on duty at all times patrolling the 10 main intersections and highways.

They are the following:

I-35E north and south

I-20 east and west

75 north and south

635 entire loop

114 east and west

183 east and west

175 north and south

North Dallas Tollway north and south

George Bush Turnpike east and west

360 north and south

Now 5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every officer is supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 minutes. They have issued 30 brand new unmarked Crown Victoria cruisers and they are bringing all their part timers on full time. If you work in Dallas or the surrounding areas you must take one of these interstates, routes, or parkways. It's up to you how fast you are doing when they do. WBAP-820 AM confirmed all of this yesterday morning. "

E-mail hoax claims speeding ticket "frenzy"

You may have received the e-mail, perhaps twice...or three times warning you of a speeding ticket frenzy coming to Dallas and Texas this weekend and supposedly confirmed by WBAP News/Talk 820. What's the real story?

Here's the text of the e-mail making its rounds heading into this weekend:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas and the state of Texas will launch a 30-day speeding ticket frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers and Dallas Police officers overtime. There will be 50 police officers and state troopers in the Metroplex on duty at all times patrolling the 10 main intersections and highways.

So be safe and don't forget speeding tickets are on you.

First and foremost this was never reported and confirmed by WBAP News/Talk 820. In fact, until the phone calls and e-mails started coming in it hadn't even been on the air at WBAP. However, WBAP's NewsCenter 820 has spoken with the Dallas Police Department and the only thing we can confirm is that the DPD knows nothing about any such "speeding ticket frenzy" this weekend or anytime in the future.

It's a HOAX - plain and simple. This same hoax started in New Jersey back in 2005, then migrated to Tennessee in July 2005. Next it made it's way to Orange County, California by the end of 2005 - and now it's Texas' time.

You can check Snopes.com to find out more specific details of this hoax.

+1 on this, there is no way this is fiscally possible without us knowing about it, the cost alone of deploying all of these resources would be astronomical and all for piddly speeding tickets? yeah right not going to happen, they'd have to issue a ticket to just about every 10th car just to pay for everything

Regardless whether or not the email is true, I saw Allen Cops between McKinney and Allen in both directions this morning pulling over massive amounts of people.
They had one cop with a Laser on the Overpass, and 3-4 cop cars another half mile down.

Just an FYI, as this was this morning at around 11:45

FYI as well, richardson cops are out in force the last 2 weeks and all they're doing is writing tickets. This is mostly up and down 75 and it appears that plano cops (though I havent been in plano much lately) may be doing the same.

I've seen several richardson cops even setting up traps at night and using laser at night as well so watch out.

FYI, it's very uncommon to use laser at night but they're doing it.

John...I think you are correct on the Plano cops. Jackie and I went out for a bite last night and saw x3 Plano cops writting tickets to people on Legacy alone. We were only going to 75...thats like 1.5 miles. They are out in force.

Be safe out there all.

At this point you should be able to spell my name! It's Jon! Haha!

Anyway.. Legacy is a prime patrol area. It's ALWAYS been bad. Legacy and 75 is one of the worst places you can go on a saturday night.

I gotta say that I don't miss living in that area. I was lucky to only get pulled over that one time there.

Also, plano cops have overtime subsidized by the US govt. I'm not kidding cuz when I got pulled over they gave me a little card informing me of that.

Legacy is one of 2 streets in plano that they can work overtime end to end and get paid to write tickets. Park is the other one (unless they've added more since then). They can work sections of other streets as well. If you get stopped in plano and they hand you a little blue card, they WILL be writing you a ticket.

My advice.. stay out of plano or drive the speed limit. As I haven't been pulled over in richardson yet, I don't know if they have the same rules.

This seems quite normal for Richardson. I've gotten so many ridiculous tickets there that i've made a concious effort to avoid that city as much as possible.
Plano is pretty bad as well, but I work there... so i really have no choice.

You don't have to warn Danny to drive the speed limit. His nickname is "Morty Silverstein, grandpa driver". He drives soooo slow, it kills me.
