Wird: yes, it is the Pettit. Vacuum leak: hmmmm. Yes, MAF is plugged back in; wouldn't hurt to retrace the vacuum lines and accumulator; might as well go back to square one and repeat the compression testing to be sure I didn't screw that up. Snowing another 5-10 inches here today, should have plenty of time to look it over.

One interesting thing. This car has always smelled like it was running rich at idle. At stoplights, the cabin would just stink of exhaust; I thought there was a manifold leak as the previous owner had installed an OBX system, and his installations skilz were, well, lacking. I replaced with a better manifold, new gaskets, and still had that problem. When trying to start the car now, the garage just fills with smoke and smells pig rich; when I pull the plugs, they're wet. I've even reflashed the stock map on the ECU and tried starting, but get the same problem. If you can think of anything I'm missing, I'm all ears.

Update from his website:

*** Important Update *** 03/11/2010 - At this time I am officially announcing the TR-01 v2.0! More information will come in the near future but the most notable new feature for v2.0 is the ability to datalog your compression readings to a PC. Also, I am currently out of stock of the original TR-01 and do not plan to sell anymore in the future. For those with the original tester don't worry, I have plenty of spare parts and will be able to support your testers for years to come. Thank you. -John

Version 1 has proven itself

It is accurate and very reliable and cost effective.

Why not buy a part of history, his compression testers will be around for a long long long time

Keep up the great work John

Just a word of caution The TR-01 gave me some false readings. It showed my engine as having low compression when in reality the engine was tested at mazda and found to be just fine.

My full story is
HERE:

both the pressure and RPM were off.

Shame the V1 were not able to be upgraded to V2. So much for the promise of code upgrades/etc.

I saw this unit and held it at seven stock, double tree pool partys ftw. It seemed pretty robust and of a high build quality

I even made a poke about it just being a transducer and some wires, but honestly, the transducers I buy at work at $650 so this is a steal

I cant really afford one now, maybe sometime in the future...just got my engine replaced...sigh...

Enjoy guys

Has the group buy for version 2 started? I've been away in Asia and am playing catch-up.

Seafoam and TR01 to the Rescue

Poured about 8 oz total Seafoam straight into rotor housings through trailing plug hole while a friend hand cranked the motor over at the crank pulley. Compression readings are now well over 100 per face on a cold motor; still tracking down an electro-gremlin, but the seals are now free.

I found out that while a low battery will lite up the unit, it is possible that it can give some eratic readings. When the battery is exchanged for a fresh one it returned to accurate readings. Be sure an keep a fresh battery in the unit.

V2 will use your lap top and will be Windows & Blue Tooth capable. In some ways it will be upgraded as those with V1 will not have to purchase some of the parts.

It will go into Beta testing shortly and then I am sure a group buy will follow.

I don't get this laptop and blue-tooth thing. It's only a few numbers - write them down on a piece of paper.

If I were going to upgrade this thing, I would add another pressure transducer so that you could test both rotors at the same time.

I would also display a final average while still displaying the instantaneous data. The average would discard the first two and last two readings. The fact that the last data being displayed appears to include the rundown of the engine raises some questions regarding its ultimate accuracy.

Any idea on V2 price point? Are we looking at the same pricing as V1? These look like a GREAT product and beats pretty much everything else out here. I'm in line for one based on the cost... Keep up the good work!
