Let them flame that you have an AT RX-8... Not like they have a Manual RX-8 or something better... at least not most of them.

You should be more concern if they diss you for letting your mommy and daddy buy you a car. I think that's the best bitch slap there is... That's why I bought my own car when I was 18, and cars after that. I could drive a stupid *** slow car, but in the end, I paid for it.

Isn't the 2005 WRX wagon the only one that comes AT? IkeWRX, tells us a little bit more for us please...

Very funny, but as many brand new audi TTs, BMW z4s and G35s that I see at my school, I hardly think they will rag on me for having an rx8 or a wrx (and no they didn't pay for those themselves either). True they may say stuff for having an auto, but any day now my mom may crack

come on now, its not like everyone has one but a 30,000+ car is quite common - I would not be in the minority, and if my parents are gonna let me drive a nice car why should I complain?

Just ignore it man, a lot of people on these boards have a hate on for anyone that they feel doesn't deserve the car. My parents bought me a 4000 dollar bicycle when I was younger and pay the lease on my car right now. I work hard and they helped me obtain things that hard work at my age could not have afforded under normal circumstances. I turned out perfectly fine, actually better than fine, I am more responsible than most people my age, have a strong character, a good work ethic and understand the value of a dollar.

People are always going to be jealous of stuff like this, ignore it. If you parents have decided this is what they want to do, and they feel it appropriate, and you have discussed it with them and come too an agreement, then there is no reason not too do it. Just be sure too let them know you appreciate it, put them in a nice home when you're older :D j/k

30k car for a 17 year old isn't that common.. that's the catch. Most of the owners bought the cars themselves. Only a few selected are able to get the car with the help of their parents buying it for them.

There are always two classes of kids that get cars like this... 1) Their family is making good money so they get them the car... the kid doesn't brag.. just accepts it. Then the rest of the kids 2) That brag about owning a 30k+ car, modifying it, and saying they EARNED it as if their grades equate an expensive car.

Just be happy what you get... a car is still a car. A 30k Car for a 17 year old is uncommon... have you tried thinking about making 30k yourself? Think about owning a house, making monthly gas bills/electricity, etc etc... that 30k is a luxury.

Still, if the rest of the family is driving it... perhaps the WRX minus the crazy wing. Looks kinda cheesy when your mom drives a WRX and has this huge 4 foot high wing in the back.

My high school had M3s, 3000GT VR4, a bunch of Acura Legends, Lexus..etc... Now it's ten years later, and most of them still are driving those same cars now... the exact same car they drove in High school. Hmmm..... Especially one particular *** that bragged about getting a VR4 and took pictures of it and handed it out to people. I just saw the same guy working at the mall at EBgames, and we chatted a bit about how life has been. He's still driving that same VR4 10 years later, and still living at home. Hmmm....

Can't really be jealous if most of the people here own an RX-8 already that they purchased themselves. :P

See, when my parents are older, they can live with me.. (Asian style)... can't really just stick my parents in a home as if I don't care. If they don't want to live with me, I'll just buy them a house to live nearby.

If those are the requirements, you'd be crazy not to get a Legacy GT. That car is very nice.

Well, that is exactly why one might be jealous, they had to pay for it with hard work while others get it for free.

If you think about it... if you can pay for an RX-8... why would you be jealous of someone that couldn't pay for it? You would assume that they have more money than the person that couldn't pay for it themselves... they don't need to ask their parents for lunch money, or ask them to give them money to hang out with their friends, or buy a new mod for their car working at a minimum wage job...etc. So no, I doubt you can say it's jealousy.

I couldn't care less about the whole thing. But the fact is, while you feel that way, clearly other people don't. People get up in arms about the fact that kids get things without working for them. Some get upset that they had to work hard for it, and in the end someone has the exact same car and did nothing for it, so they assume they won't appreciate it, or have a weak character or some other nonesense.

It's not necessarily in this thread, but I have definitely seen this attitude.

hehe well I think the brainwash idea may be working: when I asked about manual I got a "we'll see" rather than a no. Really though for city driving you can pretty much stay in the first 2-3 gears right? My dad can do manual np, so its my mission to teach my mom and see about it, although I might be fine with auto.

keep workin on it! I mean to me it always seems embarrasing to say yea i have a (put in your sports car) then they ask really! Is it 5 or 6 speed, then you tell em, shoot- better believe it, its auto baby!
Sports cars are ment to be drivin hard, smart, but hard. SPORTS car. Unless you consider chess a sport.

I really think manual is a good idea. I know it made me a much better driver, even though I really didn't think I wanted to learn at first. It keeps you focused, makes you pay attention to everything that's going on with the car, and it gives you more incentive to become a better driver. I think you'll be much happier with a manual and your parents will be much happier with your driving.

About what gears you use...For around town stuff, you can actually get up to 5th (or 6th in the 8) when you hit about 50 (to save gas while cruising), but you spend a lot of time in the lower half of your selections due to stop and go conditions. Also, the whole issue with having to shift around in stop and go traffic is largely overblown. IMO, it's really not that bad to have to repeatedly launch the car in stop and go stuff unless you're doing it on a daily basis.

Please, when you test drive the auto, do it a big favor and at least run it in tiptronic mode. You'd be surprised at how fun it can be and that it's NOT lacking power at all for everyday fun stuff. By all means, if you're driving a tester RX-8 on a dealer's lot, run it to at least 5k before shifting, and feel the power come online. I own an AT and I'm still just as capable of making passengers scream "OH SH*T!!!" at every corner and turn I make. You can still leave 90-95% of the cars out there in the dust if you simply know how to drive the car properly. I personally hate clutches and don't see myself ever actually owning a car that had a clutch...the SMG RX-8 would be heaven for me but oh well, I'm pretty happy with what I have now.

I'm still surprised people think that the RX-8 is a sports car. No matter if it's Manual, my old FD could outrun this... I would even give it 5 car lengths.

The RX-8 is a nice handling, good looking car... but please.. just because you drive stick, don't think it's the fastest car on the road. You still have the S2000, 350z, G35, RSX-S, WRX, etc etc to outrun it. Be a bit more sensible and realistic on the potential of the RX-8.

I think a WRX is more sensible in your situation. However, I have a better idea. My advice is to get a Legacy GT or GT Limited. 250hp, automatic available, nicer looking IMO then a WRX, and more powerful. Very luxurious and smooth riding car. They are under 30k, so why settle for a WRX when you can get the better vehicle. I bought an STI, but if the Legacy GT had 300hp, I'd have dissed the STI in a heartbeat. I chose power over luxury I must confess.

Okay, so gimme your definition of "sports car."

The Miata isn't very quick, so it's not a "sports car?"

I dunno but your logic seems screwy. Everyone's definition of "sports car" is gonna be different. Some people wouldn't consider an EVO/STi a "sports car" while others would. Nobody is saying the RX-8 is all powerful, so please, get off your high horse Mr. FD.
