Will there be a new RX-7

Let me say first I love the Rx-8 and will get one as soon as I can get the cash. But I was thinking it looks like that Mazda has no intention of ever making another RX-7 I think they intend for this to be there rotary power sportscar and just add more power to make it faster in the future. I sure would like for them to make a new RX-7 and make if really fast. So it could compete with the Corrvette, Viper and cars of that caliber. I want everyone to know I own 2 Rx-7 and will own more in the future. When I say compete I mean having sub 5 sec 0-60 time and 12. sec 1/4 mile times etc.....

I was reading something on this forum a few days ago that had an interview with someone with Mazda saying that 2006 would be the year likely to have a new RX-7

i met one of the head product development guys from mazda japan, while he was here on vacation, and asked him this very question. his answer...

"the RX7 is dead, the only thing we [mazda] are thinking about is the RX8 and if it would be in our best interest to keep it as a 4 door or go to a 2 door. this is the same thing that we did with all the other RX, besides the 5-6. the only reason the 7 was out for so long was that it had the popularity, it just got better with age."

not exactly what he said, but close enough

do not expect an 4th gen RX7 anytime ever, because the 8 is the continuation.

I think it would be pretty sad if Mazda did not release a new 7. Mazda has already stated that they have to develop other cars that use the same platform to make it worth while. So, I would imagine an RX7 (or spiritual successor) and a convertible variant would be next in line. I mean it looks like the Z is doing fairly well. I would think a new 7 could do just as well if not better (since it wouldn't be so ugly :D ). I mean how can a "Sports Car" company not manufacture a pure sports car. My $ .02.

Wanna bet? I will bet that there will be an RX-7 concept car displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show this fall 2003, and that a production RX-7 will be on sale in the US in 2005 as a 2006 model. (Development is well under way).

My internal source against your vacationing guy who isn't likely to be giving away Mazda confidential product planning information in a casual chat while on holidays, so was probably just having some fun jerking you around! He was on holidays, right?

Regards,
Gordon

...don't worry, he is.

it's been known for a long time that the RX-7's return would be dependant upon the RX-8, and so far so good... maybe even better than expected??

I don't think the decision has been made yet. We have enough information that we can say with some confidence that there is some development going on, but whether that will come to anything depends on how a few things shake out, including the success (financial, reputation, and mechanical) of the RX8.

Mazda execs have mentioned in several interviews how they have come to realize how important a strong performance car is to image and draw to a motor company. As great of a car the Miata is, it is not the kind of image car that say a 350Z, Supra, Mustang Cobra, or Corvette is. The RX8 isn't that car either.

Gord, you should stop teasing the children and give them a link to Bwob's thread in Miata.net. I would trust his sources over a vacationing designer who is bound by confidentiality agreements any day.

Would love to see the 7 come back as I really liked the looks of the FB, FC and FD. Love the 8. Only problem is that both have a hard top and my wife wants another convertable.

Maybe I will go with the MS Miata while I wait.
