What's even more of a failure is people with sports cars who go great depths to get these big wings thinking it will increase their performance or grip or whatever when they have no idea how the dynamics of a wing works. Reality is, 99% of people who get them never even use their functionality unknowingly because they don't understand fluid dynamics of a wing.
The RX-8? Best wing you can get that contributes any would be a lip spoiler on the trunk for typical use. If you were looking into track purposes, well, the average wing won't do much contrast to popular belief, more towards aesthetic looks than anything is what they attribute to.

If a wing had a wickerbill (a bent lip on the rear edge of a wing usually from 45-90 degrees) which is what we call it in the sprint car world, THEN it would give some effective downforce and actually be a tool worth working with with angles of attack.
Notice the high end racing leagues and their wings? The wings are mounted usually with the bottom of it protruded past the rear of the car. Why? Because a wing's downforce is created at the bottom, not the top. This is where a wickerbill comes into place to assist with downforce with a wing that is not extended past the trunk.
Think of it like pulling up on your shoes for downforce, doesn't do ****. For a wing to be truly be effective to its full potential there needs to be nothing between the bottom of the wing and the road. The closer to the road the better. Since obviously it can only be so close, higher speeds are needed for it to be effective with such a distance.
