As far as getting a better (im assuming more expensive) car, i'd rather not spend a ton on a new car...I have this money at my disposal, I really don't want to start getting myself into debt.

I would get what makes sense to you. You haven't told us about your life at all so we have no way of providing any useful information other than what we would do.

Buy a used Z, keep it for a few years, while waiting for the car the 16x goes into...hopefully an rx-7.

I live in N NJ, commute 38 miles round trip to school usually 4 days a week 15 weeks per semester. Mostly hang out locally but do drive to friends around campus. And work isnt too far from me.

So I would need something that can handle relatively bad weather, perferably better than the RX8.

O and no to the Z. I don't really like Zs and I can't have a 2 seater

Seriously doubt you'll find a used impreza or civic for 2-3k. Even if you do you will be paying for things that break. Get something taht won't depreciate much like a 04-05 WRX or an 03-04 Audi A4. Both can take some modest mods and be fun while most of the heavy depreciation has alread occured but serious maintenance is still a few years off.

Don't get a used EVO. The previous owner probably ran the hell out of it and the insurance on them is ridiculous.

I still vote for MS3 with no Nav. You don't need directions.

In the same boat here, I am about to get out of my 8. Had three camaro's before '94, '99, '02. Waiting for the new one. I will be getting an Explorer, the wife will take it when the camaro comes out, and we will sell her escape she is currently driving.

Buy a beater, invest the rest. 2 years in a beater will make you appreciate the new Camaro more. Plus the beater could still be a servicable car to protect mighty Camaro on nasty days.

I was on a few GTI forums and as much as I like that car, I really don't think I would get it. They said that the quality has gone down from the last generation, esp when modded. And I would want to mod b/c they are a little slow for my taste..and their price

I want a car, not a track car...something comfortable to DD, even though it wont be.

As nice a car as it is, I would want something with more on the inside, esp for the price of one.

I can definitely appreciate the Lotus for what it does and it's purpose. But the Camaro will be an only car, so more practical for that.

Get the MS3. ALL of my previous FWD experience was in horribly balanced cars, so I was an FWD hater. I couldn't believe I was driving FWD when I first drove this car - it's balanced about as well as I'd imagine a daily driven FWD car can be balanced.

That said, understeer and torque steer will show it's ugly head every now and again, but you will almost always be able to predict when they occur. Though, every now and again the torque limitations will suddenly disappear while turning, and torque steer will hit you pretty hard. You'll learn to be ready for this after just a few days.

Those are the only problems I have with the car. Everything else is nearly perfect - stupid-huge gobs of power, surprisingly good handling, and tons of practicality. Really can't complain about much, I'd imagine if you're looking for more power you'll be pretty happy.

What would you suggest I should look for around that price that would serve as a decent (relatively reliable) DD?

I agree with Ike. Lease/finance a car and take the rest of that cash to the market. You basically can get any car you want. Forget the unattractive MS3, try some other car brands...you only live once.
