Waltrip's crew chief thrown out of the Daytona 500

Not that I'm a big fan of watching cars turn left. But NASCAR sure is finding a lot of cheaters lately.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -Michael Waltrip's crew chief and team director were thrown out of the Daytona 500 and suspended indefinitely Wednesday because an illegal substance was found during inspection for the season-opening race.

Waltrip, docked 100 points, will be allowed to participate in Thursday's races that determine the field for NASCAR's biggest event of the year.

David Hyder, his crew chief, was thrown out of the garage and fined $100,000. Team director Bobby Kennedy also was kicked out.

NASCAR officials would not reveal what they found in Waltrip's intake manifold, but a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press it was a form of jet fuel.

I'm a quasi-fan of Nascar but I'm a fan of Waltrip since he seems like a genuine guy and his banter on a few shows is hilarious.

I like how Nascar handed down these fines while stating they still dont know what this "substance" is. All they'd say is it was like vasoline, they are unsure if it was on the manifold before running or if it was in the gas tank. I hope the team wasnt trying to cheat since personaly I wanna see Toyota mop the floor with the other "Big Boys".

No one is good unless ya have the $$$$$$$$$ to back it up. Why I'm a quasi-fan of Nascar. They claim "level playing field" but its all b.s. though the "Car of Tomorrow" race's this year should prove entertaining since everyone is starting from square one.

Article doesn't say NASCAR doesn't know what the substance was -- just that they weren't saying what it was.

I think that's partially true. Look at Tony Stewart. He's won in practically every form of car he's ever driven even without major financial backing in some cases.

I was watching the Press Conference on Speed Channel. They pretty much implied that they have no real clue what it is but they know its not normal. My bad for not stating that

Here's an update on the mystery substance:

NASCAR officials would not reveal what they found in Waltrip’s intake manifold, but a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press it was a property contained in jet fuel.
NASCAR competition director Robin Pemberton said only that the substance was not jet fuel itself.
“We’re not going to go into any great detail, but it was a foreign substance that we feel should not have been inside the engine, and we’ll leave it at that,” Pemberton said. “I don’t think this is anything that we’ve seen in the recent past.”
The substance was found during the inspection of Waltrip’s new Toyota Camry before Sunday’s qualifying session. NASCAR seized the part and shipped it back to North Carolina for analysis, and spent all day Wednesday pulling parts and pieces from under the hood.
The manifold is a part of the engine that supplies the fuel/air mix to the engine cylinders. Waltrip’s team coated the inside of it with an illegal substance that is believed to be a property contained in jet fuel.
Waltrip’s team maintains it was oil.
If true, maybe they were trying to overcome the restrictor plate.

Why? It's not like Toyota is some underdog clawing their way to the top. They're the #1 car maker in the US. Personally, I hope they suck at every race series they ever attempt because frankly their lineup puts me to sleep. The only exciting thing they have is some dumbass "performance hybrid" concept they're probably not going to build.

I don't know the specifics, but it sounds like someone coated the inside of the manifold in an effort to improve airflow.

Well in Nascar they are the underdog. Alot in the community didnt want Toyota in the Craftsman Truck Series seeing it "ruining the tradition of Nascar". I want 'em to win to shut all of them up, since in reality Toyota being in the series is going to open up a whole entire world market for 'em. That is what Nascar has wanted for awhile now, hence why they have the Mexico race and now the Canadian races this year (sure Busch only but from what i heard its a trail run to see turnout/interest). That and way things are going Ford wont be in there in a few years and GM the same. More interest in the sport they hope will generate more interest in the cars (atleast that is what all the car makers hope).

Sad that this happened for Toyota in the first race, hopefully this um "substance" will officaly be named and not swept under the table like most "scandals" in Nascar.

Michael Waltrip is one of the good guys. Sad to see him caught up in this. Terrible start for Toyota too. Hopefully both with be able to have a clean season and be competitive.

I read somewhere that they unofficially said the substance was a type of oxygenator like what would be found in jet fuel. They know what it is, they just aren't telling. Maybe they don't want to invite copycats who might be better at hiding things.

This episode puts them under even more scrutiny from the industry as a whole as well as pressure from fans and sponsors for some wins. It may be an uphill battle for the team and the car at this point but, if they can pull it off in the end they're to be commended.
