Waltrip's crew chief thrown out of the Daytona 500
Not that I'm a big fan of watching cars turn left. But NASCAR sure is finding a lot of cheaters lately.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -Michael Waltrip's crew chief and team director were thrown out of the Daytona 500 and suspended indefinitely Wednesday because an illegal substance was found during inspection for the season-opening race.
Waltrip, docked 100 points, will be allowed to participate in Thursday's races that determine the field for NASCAR's biggest event of the year.
David Hyder, his crew chief, was thrown out of the garage and fined $100,000. Team director Bobby Kennedy also was kicked out.
NASCAR officials would not reveal what they found in Waltrip's intake manifold, but a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press it was a form of jet fuel.

I'm a quasi-fan of Nascar but I'm a fan of Waltrip since he seems like a genuine guy and his banter on a few shows is hilarious.
I like how Nascar handed down these fines while stating they still dont know what this "substance" is. All they'd say is it was like vasoline, they are unsure if it was on the manifold before running or if it was in the gas tank. I hope the team wasnt trying to cheat since personaly I wanna see Toyota mop the floor with the other "Big Boys".

I think that's partially true. Look at Tony Stewart. He's won in practically every form of car he's ever driven even without major financial backing in some cases.

Here's an update on the mystery substance:
If true, maybe they were trying to overcome the restrictor plate.
NASCAR officials would not reveal what they found in Waltrip’s intake manifold, but a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press it was a property contained in jet fuel.
NASCAR competition director Robin Pemberton said only that the substance was not jet fuel itself.
“We’re not going to go into any great detail, but it was a foreign substance that we feel should not have been inside the engine, and we’ll leave it at that,” Pemberton said. “I don’t think this is anything that we’ve seen in the recent past.”
The substance was found during the inspection of Waltrip’s new Toyota Camry before Sunday’s qualifying session. NASCAR seized the part and shipped it back to North Carolina for analysis, and spent all day Wednesday pulling parts and pieces from under the hood.
The manifold is a part of the engine that supplies the fuel/air mix to the engine cylinders. Waltrip’s team coated the inside of it with an illegal substance that is believed to be a property contained in jet fuel.
Waltrip’s team maintains it was oil.

Sad that this happened for Toyota in the first race, hopefully this um "substance" will officaly be named and not swept under the table like most "scandals" in Nascar.

Michael Waltrip is one of the good guys. Sad to see him caught up in this. Terrible start for Toyota too. Hopefully both with be able to have a clean season and be competitive.
I read somewhere that they unofficially said the substance was a type of oxygenator like what would be found in jet fuel. They know what it is, they just aren't telling. Maybe they don't want to invite copycats who might be better at hiding things.

This episode puts them under even more scrutiny from the industry as a whole as well as pressure from fans and sponsors for some wins. It may be an uphill battle for the team and the car at this point but, if they can pull it off in the end they're to be commended.
