I really liked it. As a matter of fact I really like all the latest VW commercials. I think their marketing team should be proud.

I hoped you "explained" it to them by showing them what the cars were doing in the dark alleys.

Maybe you didn't think it was clever because you're a moron.

no it doesn't. The MkV platform has a better 4 wheel independent suspension. With the OEM springs from Europe or aftermarket springs... the car is said to handle pretty good. With the US OEM springs the car mags said it (the GTI, not Rabbit) handled well, but better as a daily driver. The Civic Si handled better. But the US springs are also much higher which is helping nothing in this department.... which is why i said with the Euro springs or aftermarket springs.

A base GTI is about $20k invoice. A package 2 GTI (same as RX-8 GT package) is $24k invoice. Straight line performance is similar to the RX-8... 0-60 in 6 sec and 1/4mi in the 14's.... but with lots of torque across the rev range and lots of aftermarket upgrades already available (including multiple ECU flashers). Not a bad bang for the buck.

It's nothing personal -- I'm just a big sissy.

They are. Crispin Porter + Bogusky (the guys behind the "pimped out" VDub commercials and proposal to bring back the rabbit name) are right up there in the advertising industry. On a couple of magazine covers, too (BusinessWeek). In case you can't figure it out, I'm writing from my cubicle.

I thought it was a good commercial....the white and black one were driving around together and then suddenly there were a whole bunch of grey ones. I had heard before they were bringing back the rabbit name and thought, "this must be it"

VW is doing a bang up job with their new lineup of cars, IMO.

I love the new Passat, the new GTI is pretty respectable for what it is (DSG helps, too), and the Rabbit looks to be compelling alternative to the boredom of the appliances that are the Corollas, Sentras...

And as usual, no other mass manufacturer does interiors like VW.

I always had this theory that most VW owners were also Mac users. I don't know what it was, but I've known about 10 VW owners and all but one were Apple happy and proud of it. I guess it has something to do with wanting to be different or liking simplicity in form and function.

I'm meeting my dad at the vw dealership today. He's debating whether to by a mid year 2006 Rabbit that have there in his color, or wait a few months and order up a 2007. They will be same exact car, so I told him it makes no difference, since he drives cars more then 5 years, and well over 100k miles before ever getting rid of them, so depreciation plays little to no factor by getting an 06 instead of 07. Should be fun. He's weery about the 2.5L 5 cylinder engine though, and I told him I don't blame him. He's been driving the 2.0 models, with 0 problems. I told him, any car is a risk, but he's a vw guy, and needs to either accept it, or move onto another car company. He enjoys these cars too much, as I myself do, I suspect we'll either be driving the 06 off the lot today, or he'll be making a deposit on an 07, and getting a couple more months out of his high mileage 01 Golf. There is one 06 older style left, but he's leaning towards the new look, and the more hp and torque.

I heard that although the Rabbit is now built in Wolfsburg, it will eventually be assembled in Mexico.

Now, that apparently is a cause of concern for some, and is causing some to rush their purchases.

I have no idea if this information is true or not.

the last i read was VW stopped building in mexico because of the problems they were having from the one's built in mexico. i dont see why they would go back to building them in mexico when they are just finally getting the good reputation back.

(ps- 06 gti owner here, and i love it)

What I wonder is, if the Golf name remains overseas?
The Golf was always named Golf overseas from 1974 to 2006 (Rabbit did never come up). Also the Golf GTI was never named GTI and always named Golf GTI from 1976 from 2006.

Who knows whether it made a difference. Well, apart from the marketing people that probably made a ton of money with this.

As far as I'm concerned, I rather play golf than drive golf.

Also the VW Lupo wasn't renamed Fox. The Lupo was simply dropped and the Fox is a cheap VW designed and produced in Brasil - now sold in Europe.

I think the Rabbit is more interesting than the Golf name. At least the little bunny badge is endearing.

So far it looks like the new Jetta/Rabbit are holding up better from reports. I guess it couldn't get any worse.

I do like the new GTI though. The new R32 should be smokin'.

One reason the name 'Golf' was always kinda odd here in North America is because it's meaningless—especially when we assume it somehow means golf, the game with the little white ball. It doesn't.

In Europe, Golf denotes 'Gulf,' which is short for the "Gulfstream"—the wind over the current that crosses the Atlantic. You see, back in the 70's VW started naming their cars after winds:

Golf = Gulfstream
Scirocco = hot African desert wind
Jetta = short for "jet stream"
Passat = trade wind
Bora = cold mountain wind
Eos = from Greek/Roman mythology, the mother of all winds

Coming on the heels of the well-loved "Beetle," in North America VW decided to name its new car after another critter (and a faster one), hence "Rabbit" instead of Golf.
