Twin Turbo Mazda 6

I didn't think this had been posted yet but it's a new twin turbo mazda 6 to compete with the STI and EVO.

I would understand if Mazda used a large single turbo on a 2.3 litre 4 cylinder, but twin turbos??

got to be a mistake. No way would they put a twin turbo on the four and leave the six alone. It has to be the 6 cylinder getting the twin turbo.

Not necessarily. The four is the better handling of the two models, and since it's competitors are four bangers, why not? This thing could be one wicked piece.

Which brings up the question: Could a FI RX8 be far behind? It seems that Mazda would want to keep the RX8 as the performance leader. Just a thought. Any opinions?

Hopefully, all the magazine reports are hinting at a higher horsepower RX8 coming; especially seeing that alot of suspension tweaks have been engineered in that would signal more power. Hopefully Mazda has a better time at FI than these aftermarket tuners. My hope is starting to fade.

6 Cylinder would be too much for Twin-Turbo for a car like the 6.

Anyways, STI and Evo have nothing on this car.

You guys remember this beast?

Underneath the hood is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a direct gasoline injection system. It makes 280 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 263 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm.

Nice- should be a really fun car- do you think then we'll stop getting so many EVO/STI comparisons to the 8?

Not necessarily- the six is not as well balanced as the four due to it's heavier front weight bias. This was pointed out in a review in Sports Car International. They prefer the four overall.

Hopefully the pricing will be under $30,000.

Has to be under 30k, over 30k won't look good for Mazda.

pricing should easily be under 30k, seeing how a 4cyl 6i FULLY loaded is only about 26k STICKER

Twin-turbo has got to be a typo here, perhaps they meant "twin-scroll turbocharger".

Also, using the 4-cyl makes sense not just because of the weight, but also because the Mazdaspeed 3 and Mazdaspeed NC Miata will most likely use the same engine (albeit in detuned versions). This way, Mazda can afford to engineer and test the crap out of the engine since the cost will be amoritized across several models.

The 6 cylinder is to big for the all-wheel drive system to fit with it, hence the turbo 4 cylinder.

I bet you're right, I'd be really shocked to see another TT car in production (save for supercars). There's just no need for it with all the different turbos available you can find one to fit almost any application and type of driving experience you're after.

Save for the fact that you can actually buy an EVO or STi because they actually exist. The STi and EVO are also very proven with several years of production and have a wonderful history to them, especially if you're a WRC fan.

The 6 has offered awd in estate form overseas for quite some time. It is an already existing platform. It also happens to be mated to the 2.3l as they do not get the 3.0l. That is an American engine only.

The fact they already have a awd 2.3l among other reasons would be why to use the 4 cylinder.

with that in mind, i'm gonna make a bold prediction.

the 2005 Mazdaspeed 6 will MSRP at $29,000.

of course, don't hold me against it if i'm off by a dollar :D

yes i know that. however after the MPS6 prototype was shown in Paris (2 yrs ago?) one of the Mazda bigwigs whne asked when it would be brought out said it would be sometime before they sorted out the awd. the quote is on here somewhere i'll see if i can dig it up
