Toyota Recalls 55,000 cars!!

for defective floormats.

Toyota says it's recalling optional "all-weather" floor mats available in the Lexus ES350 and Toyota Camry. About 55,000 vehicles are affected.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a consumer advisory warning that the heavy-duty rubber floor mats, if unsecured, could move forward and press the gas pedal, which could cause the car to accelerate uncontrollably.

"heavy-duty rubber floor mats, if unsecured, could move forward and press the gas pedal, which could cause the car to accelerate uncontrollably."

lol
imagine that in the news, a car crash happened because the floor mat hit the accelerator.

Hey that thing almost happened to me...in my 8 noe less. My foormat wasn't placed properly 1 day as aI was driving on the highway doing about 80 mph. All of a sudden I went to slow down a bit and downshifted to 4th. the engine kept reving higher and higher as I was lifting my foot off the pedal. it redlined, hit the limiter, I almost panicked, I thought the accelerator broke. Upon trying to recreate the incident I realized the accelerator got stuck under the floor mat.

What if...... Mazda had a problem with the floormats in the Rx-8.
Mazda's offical reply "Its a normal function of the Rx-8's floormats."

I liked what Autoextremist had to say about this.

"Toyota is recalling floor mats used in the 2007 Camry and Lexus ES 350 models due to complaints that the mats can slip forward and get caught up in the accelerator pedal. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also urged drivers of the Avalon and Prius hybrids to check that their floor mats are properly installed. A floor mat recall? We know Toyota drivers thrive on their bland-tastic conveyances, but are they that clueless about driving and taking care of their floor mats that Toyota needed to do a recall? WTF?"

I'm surprised everyone thinks this is so lol-worthy. This kind of thing is very common. I'm impressed Toyota would take it so seriously and attempt to do something about it.

no, I'm not impressed with Toyota. This is simply taking C.Y.A. to a whole new level.

I've had this happen to me. In the first RX-7 that I owned, I had the floormat move forward slightly. It was just enough that when I pushed the gas pedal down, it got stuck. This happened to me in my subdivision in 2nd gear. I was coming up on a curve. Thank god that car could handle. It took me a couple of seconds to realize what happened and I still ahve to drive the car. I ended up pulling it out of gear and letting the engine hit the rev limiter. I realized pretty quick what it was and reached down and moved the floor mat. The 2nd time it happened to me I just shut the ignition off. It's scary.

My girlfriend has a Camry and I have no doubt that if it happened to her, she wouldn't even think to turn the car off. She'd probably just hit something. There was a similar incedent here last year. A lady was screaming on the phone to 911 that her car wouldn't slow down. She weaved in and out of traffic for 20+ miles before hitting someone. Don't give most people too much credit. What is obvious to some isn't to others.

that's why all floormats should have the floormat hook.

The title is a misleading...they're recalling car floor mats - not the car

All floor mats or any other object can get stuck under the pedal.
