Test Drove CX-7
Well, the Wife did most of the test drive. It would be her car if we got it.
The car is very nicely done. We drove the GT with Technology package (Navi, Keyless, Rear Camera, etc.), but not AWD. They only had FWD on the lot. :-(
The power comes on pretty quick, and stays on through each gear. Handling is way better than I expected. There is some push, but its not as bad as I had thought. Fit and finish is good; shares many materials with the RX-8. All in all, probably will be the car of choice for her.
She wants to wait though because Acura is releasing their RDX in August with a turbo 4 cylinder as well, and figures she may as well see what gives. This is unheard of for Honda - a turbo! I can't wait to see what happens when someone stuffs this 2.3L turbo into a Civic! Anyway, we stopped at the Acura dealer and spoke to some completely uneducated kid. What an ****! He started dissing Mazda (I was in my 8) saying they had poor quality, blah blah. He told me the RDX would "come standard with a 19" wheel base". I told him that was kinda short. He never got it. Then he told me about the Navi, etc. I told him that would come in real handy when I needed to tell the tow truck where I was after the tranny fell out. (I had a CL-S, and the Wife has a TL-S...mine had 2 tranny replacements and hers has had 3.) That left him sort of speechless. I doubt she'll get the Acura; they say its in competition with the BMW X3. I told him ya right. They have it projected to be high $30K! An MDX is about $39K. The fully-loaded Mazda is $32K.

How could I not, it looks like the RX-8! Glad you liked the CX-7. Too bad they didnt have any AWD's cuz that's going to be the model to have.

i tried out the AWD CX-7 and i thought it was great, felt like a faster rx300 (looks the same too (with rx8 fenders). Felt very light and agile for an suv and it also had that great turbo boost feel. Im curious as to the actual performance numbers...in a straight line i think it may give the 8 a run for the money.

The RDX is like an X3 gone wrong in my opinion...plus its very expensive for what it is. I'd go with the CX7. I think the RDX will find a home with a lot of nameplate poseurs.

It just goes to show you how much turbo can do for you.

Yep, I think it will probably outrun us in a straight line in the bump-shift mode. I think Acura's arrogance will ruin the RDX. I'm sort of glad she wants to check it out though because I have more time to save the down payment.

...the CX-7 has not a single flat plane anywhere on its body. The front end is radically swept back, the windshield sports the fastest rake in its class, the roofline takes a dive aft of the B-pillars, and even the greenhouse features some major tumblehome and tapers in toward the rear. This thing isn't just styled, it's shaped.

The exhaust isn't more restrictive, Mazda necked down the turbocharger inlet to speed up exhaust flow for a better turbocharger response.
peak boost is still 15.6 psi, and peak power is at 5000rpm and downhill from there till 6700rpm

Stuck in a love triangle
You guys must have been smoking something on your test drives with your "gives the RX-8 a run for its money" comments. The CX-7 reaches 0-60 in the 7.5 - 7.7 seconds range. After 5,000 RPM the roller coaster is over.
Being in an SUV with F/I that can reach 60 in the upper 7s feels a lot faster than it actually is. I can probably understand where you got these crazy ideas from.

I agree with you JeRKy. We own both a CX-7 and RX-8 MT. Maybe they were refering to the underpowered 04-05 RX-8 automatic. There is no way it would be close to a RX-8 with manual trans.

None the less a great machine which performs quite well and looks great too. It is my understanding that they are beginning to pick up in sales quite a bit also. One local salesman claims to have sold 6 himself already. This type of success for Mazda makes me very happy.

I just saw the CX-7 today, WOW it looks WICKED, is it roomy inside? it looked kinda small.
You also hvae to look at it like the RX-8, its very sleek and low, it looks a lot better in real life than in pictures just like the 8, that windshield is as advertised, very sleek, awesome design

2007 MAZDA CX-7 - MIL ILLUMINATION WITH DTC P0463 OR DTC B1202 WITH NO MIL ILLUMINATION
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2007 CX-7
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may experience MIL illumination with DTC P0463 or B1202 with no MIL illumination. This may be caused by foreign material on the fuel tank sub-gauge contact point causing poor electrical contact.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
ATTENTION: PRIOR TO PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION, THIS REPAIR PROCEDURE MUST BE PERFORMED ON ALL 2007 CX-7 VEHICLES IN DEALER INVENTORY.
1. Prior to Pre-Delivery Inspection, the fuel tank must be filled with a minimum of 91 octane fuel.
NOTE: Dealers will recover fuel cost through the monthly gas reimbursement program. The reimbursement appears as a credit on the Dealer parts statement and appears within the same month or the following month that the vehicle is sold to the Dealer.
2. Remove fuse panel cover located on lower driver side dash and install the 15A room fuse (found in center console) into position #56.
3. Connect M-MDS to the DLC 16-pin connector and implement SELF-TEST and ALL CMDTC's procedures.
*
If there are no DTCs, pending codes, or past trouble codes, record the VIN for later warranty claim submission and return vehicle to dealer inventory.
*
If DTCs are stored in PCM memory, record the DTCs and VIN for later warranty claim submission.
1.
If DTCs are P0463 or B1202, clear codes.
2.
If DTCs are other than P0463 or B1202, troubleshoot according to the Workshop Manual.
4. After clearing all DTCs with M-MDS, turn ignition OFF and start engine twice, then repeat ALL CMDTC's procedure again to confirm all DTCs are erased.
*
If there are no DTCs, pending codes, or past trouble codes, return vehicle to dealer inventory.
*
If DTCs are stored in PCM memory, troubleshoot according to the Workshop Manual.
