Subaru SVX

I passed 3 of these today while driving around, one of them in particular looked great. White with black with a dark tint, and very clean and well taken care of. It's rare if I see more than one every 6 months, so it was very odd that I saw 3 within a couple hours of one another. It's still a very unique looking car, and one you want to just stare at to kind of figure out if you love it or hate it. I think it's neat that Subaru had the ***** to produce it abd the more I see them the more I think they are very cool cars. Since you many of you like to bash my car regularly, what did you all think of the SVX? I feel like the same kind of spirit that went into designing the SVX also went into designing the RX-8.

Thoughts?

Ike

In latin SVX would sound like sucks. I always wondered about why they would name a car something like that. When they came out I kinda liked the looks but never really knew anything about them. And I guess well it is just a Subaru .

I thought they were pretty cool. They had suede dashboards!

Funny Ike... I've see a few around town too. Very rare and still very unusual. I liked it at the time, still sorta do, even though it looks overwrought now.

That said, I still like the 8 better.

I thought that they were a very cool looking car for the time but for the price they were not very competitive. Especially when they only had ~225 Hp and an automatic.

I thought they were neat for a while.
Extremely dated design.
I see one or two every day around here.

Subaru builds the ugliest cars in the world. I cant even stand to look at them. While the STI is a huge leap forward compared to most of the older scoobie cars it still leaves alot to be desired.

anyone remember the XT? WTF is subaru thinking?

Very odd when it came out and expensive too, as rare as a Pacer, coincidence?

I sold my 96 SVX when I got my RX8. Another very different car. More luxury coupe than sport coupe, but a good ride. The original Car and Driver review said it had "more computer power than Albania" - very innovative for the early 90s.

Mike - you have a very undesirable aesthetic taste in cars.
I think the SVX is very innovative. Its original. I think it had a technology, performance, and funk beyond its time, like the Stealth and Galant VR4. I think it would be a lot more popular if it had a manual transmission.

Cool Almost....

This was high on my shopping list, just before the RX-8 was announced.

I was looking at them on ebay, shopping all the used lots around here, it was one of my 'top 5'.
Then I got the info that there was no such thing as a manual tranny version, and just lost interest.

Almost, so close.....

We had a beautiful red one when I was 8 and I remember we got a lot of stares. The windows were especially cool for an 8 year old :D . Then we traded it in for a Grand Cherokee .

Bash your car regularly???

I think the general mood on this forum is very positive.....including towards you. Considering........

You regularly point out things like "lackluster acceleration" when the thread is on that particular topic. You also are very quick to give input about performance times and comparisons to other cars (accord V6 for example). Its very clear that a new RX8 owner who thinks they are driving a supercar aggravates you, and you step up to show them (on paper) that they aren't. Yes you like the RX8, thats also clear, but its important to you for people to know its not terribly fast. Many, many posts from you address that very thing.

If I go to a Subaru board with a name like PatRX8 and consistantly post my input regarding whatever downfall I consider the Subaru to have......how well will I be treated?

With all of that said, your still an asset to the forum. Your post are generally well thought out and entertaining to read. You also find cool web tid bits and share them.

oh yeah....to keep on topic. I LOVED the SVX in the early 90's. I really wanted one back then but could not afford it. I have always liked subarus. My family has been buying them since the late 70's. We had a 79 hatchback, a blue 82 hatchback 5 speed. an 85 wagon 4WD and a 86 GL10 Turbo AWD.:D

I think you're reading into what I said a little too much. Perhaps it was a bit of an overstatement on my part, and it was partially in gest. Though there are some people here that get their kicks out of calling WRXs ugly just to get a rise out of me, or sometimes it's just an opinion and they may not realize or care I'm a regular member.

I've always liked the car. My fav Subaru. It sucks that they only came in auto, but their is a company that sells a manual 5spd for the car.

I like to think that I was the Subie lover that was converted by the 8. Thought I evaporated didn't ya Ike..

Anyway, fun SVX fact. First they only came in automatics. Second.. the Subaru SVX was Subaru's heaviest car to date.. ( and still may be) so the they didn't realy know how to compinsate for the cars weight shifting forward during breaking. Because of this the front rotor's would become warped and they would need frequent replaceing.

Still.. it was a car ahead of its time.
