Totally agree with the story...it is just bloody silly to change every 3000 miles or less..in a banger.
Rotary (IMO) is different, around the 3000 miles is better....because you never get all the old oil out....and BTW, my Renny 2 with EMOP's still only takes 1 litre of oil every 5000 KMS (3000 miles) after nearly 50,000 KMS, so that is 15% of the original oil is renewed by top off over a 3000 miles change....Keep in mind it has 7 litres of Oil in a Renny 2, a little less in a Renny 1.

Hey I got a Toyota turbo diesel Landcruiser as a daily driver, plus to tow my trailer with the 8 to the track and transport cargo from warehouse to warehouse. lol 80000 miles no rebuild and still runs as strong as ever :D Gotta love diesels <--- change my oil in this one every 5000 miles. Air filter at 2000 because of the very dusty roads and offroad forest trips
Frequent driving at 8000RPM is probably "Severe conditions" too

I change my beater's oil every 8-10K miles. Never had a problem with that and I think that any sooner would be overkill.
On a hard driven car with a high revving engine I would never do that though. Instead of trying to categorize people they should spend time teaching them that any engine and car use has its requirements.

why would anyone wanna sit in your 8 ... I know I wouldn't ... and the driver's seat must smell real nice

On rotaries I'll go somewhere between 3K-5K depending on my mood. You need to add oil in there anyways so there is always some fresh oil. I only use synthetic there too.
it's mpg is nowhere as good as the EPA rating tho, probably bcuz NYC is one of the worst place for driving. I get around 28 mpg in **** poor NYC traffic. Not as punchy as the 2.0 limited and 2.0 T that I test drove. well forget about the turbo cuz it's no match but even the non-turbo vs hybrid the Hybrid is slower, it has another 300-400 lbs of battery + Hybrid motor and other related crap.
Back on topic though. I think it depends on your driving habits. I've changed my oil after 1,000 miles in some of my cars because I didn't drive it enough and 1,000 miles was a years worth of driving and I just felt it was time to have the oil changed if it was sitting all winter and not driven a lot during the year.
Their web site also gives the "normal" change interval, rather than the "extreme condition" interval. Most driving includes enough short trips and stop-and-go that extreme is usually applicable. Same California mentality that, at one time, required cars to be modified to retard the ignition timing from factory specs.

We own RX-8's, possibly the most UN-environmentally friendly car on the road today. Given the poor premium gas mileage, CO2 emissions, oil consumption and drivers lead feet to hear the beep...

Don't they recycle the oil? In a brand new car I wouldn't change it so often but I'd probably like to change the oil filter more often than that.

but like others said, it's not really the oil that's failing, the oil filter is ...

This was a few years ago. The tech in oils and engines has improved over this time.
Just got done helping tear down a mitsubishi galant beater. The oil was never changed after he bought it used. Was a true beater, tore up inside, and out. The engine finally threw a rod and the water pump went out (at almost the same time) after him driving it for about 104K miles. He bought it at 160K miles, so she lasted 264K miles, and the last 100K basically didnt see an oil change... This was an 01 model, used by a friends younger brother as his get through college car.

Its one of those things in life though... its an infamous college beater... literally you hope it gets you through college without having to put a dollar in to it you know. I can understand that, you have enough bills when you grad lol.
