As subjective as this list may be, I'm glad that all three cars I own are on list. (Mitsubishi Starion, RX8 and STI). I'm not sure about the order, but for the most part they have a good list of cars there that each did well for their era. I've owned my Starion for 13 years, and back in the day it was one of the hottest machines out there. it got looks just like my RX8 does today. Today it's basically forgotten by all except enthusiasts, but it's nice to see it on the list and not forgotten for what it did in it's era.

On a side note. They need to add another car to that list. the Chrysler conquest and Starion are identical car, yet take up two spaces on the list. TISK TISK!! :D

Does anyone know how they came up with the rankings?
I remember reading this a while back in SCC. They tuned a stock WRX to be faster in all aspects than a stock STi with the same amount spent. Remember the stock STi dosent even come with a radio.

MY '91 Civic Si didn't make the cut . . . the '88-'91 CRX did, but not the regular Civic. I know the CRX's were "sportier", but I have a soft spot for my dorky little black hatch. Plus, it's a way better sleeper.

Peace

With the same amount spent, an STi still represents the better bang for the buck because, in the long run, a stock STi will cost you less in maintenance costs than a tuned WRX will. For one, a tuned WRX would not be as reliable as an STi, especially when pushing the car to 9/10s, for many reasons. Replacing the tranny and the differentials would cost enough to bring the price of the WRX at least up to that of an STi's, and then you would still have a high(er) strung engine running closer to its tolerances than the STi's engine is. A tuned EJ205 will also have much less power down low in the power band than a stock EJ257, which is fine for a track/weekend car but a peaky powerband is not ideal for a car that is driven fairly often, if not daily. Reliable power > absolute power, IMO, especially if the cars are driven frequently. However, there's no denying the fact that a WRX is a formidable machine in its own right, even when compared to its bigger brother. It should definitely be on the list, but IMO, it should not be ranked higher than the STi. I understand why they ranked the WRX higher (probably because of its greater influence on the SCC market to date), but that doesn't mean that I have to agree with it.

Oh, and the 2005 STi does come with a radio, which is part of the reason why its base MSRP went up slightly.

Where's my 911? No 911! Gimme a break! Any best car list without a 911 is not a greatest car list! And compared to the Supra the 911 IS a compact. Jeez.

911 is an over priced vw bug with horrible trunk space. The Hyundai Tiburon on the other hand, a work of art with an engine from the gods.

I think this list was referring to the greatest sport compacts, or in English, cars ricers have on their Christmas list.

Oh yes I must confess. The Starquest was one ot the unreliable vehicles for it's time. I too went through two engines, on three cars. I sold my last highly modded restored starion to help pay for the STI, but only after i fried the engine. That car was very fast, but mods= doom on that car unless you baby it, or spend a ton rebuilding and beefing it up, along with fuel mods. which serves no purpose really. I still have one left, and it will NOT be modded, because I want it to last as a classic. I dont' agree with the wrx over the STI, nor do I agree the EVO should be #1. It's obvious the creator of this list is extremely Mitsubishi bias, when in reality they are not a very good car company IMO.

"Road and Track" did a 100 greatest cars list a few years back that was much better. I think the fb RX-7 was around #40 or so.

It's all reader voting. But remember, voting for your Evo in a readers poll voids any factory warranty from Mitsubishi.

The RX-8 is ranked higher than the third gen RX-7.

Interesting.

I think you meant the 1st gen original RX-7. There was no FB, that car's chassis was referred to as the SA22C. Second gen was the FC3S, 3rd gen FD3S, and the RX-8 is the SE3P.

I had no idea what the chassis code was, but I have heard the 1st gen called FB many times before.
