If he is set on AWD:
BMW has a few AWD variants of the normal sedan/coupes, all Subarus are AWD, Audi has a few as another option. For that price, used is his only option outside of something like a AWD Toyota Matrix.

If he isn't set on AWD, just wants to be able to drive it in the snow, then a brand new set of rims + snow tires for the 8 is far far cheaper, and perfectly capable. Ground clearance is still an issue, though anything "sporty" will have that issue.

Probably should also add that salt IS still a concern, but it is with any car in the winter. For that reason alone I would prefer a different vehicle to the 8, one that the salt won't bother me as much on. However I wouldn't give up the fun for anything though, and that is why I would love to get an NA Miata. Cheap track car in the summer and lower value winter car in the snow that still allows lots and lots of fun.

if he wants something fast with awd, evo. going to rape you on insurance.

if he wants something classy with awd, bmw. going to rape you on maintenance.

audis come in awd too. but maintenance wise, bmw > audi.

an e46ix would be a nice choice. might be a bit tough to locate a manual with awd, but its possible.

Oh yeah MS6 would be nice. How about a FWD with some good snow tires? MS3?

I'd get STI over EVO used. I'd go BMW over Audi used as well.

Infiniti G sedan comes AWD as well.

R32 maybe. My friend has a really nice GTI and after driving that, an R32 would definitely be on my list if I was looking for an AWD.

I`m kinda in the same boat and was thinking of getting a Jeep YJ or something similar. Jack it up on chunky tires and forget snow exists... might be something..
