S2000 or Mazdaspeed Miata?

My heart wants to get the AP1 s2000, but I want to get into modding, especially get into installing them myself, and I get the feeling that aftermarket parts for the honda are freaking pricy, give only small gains, and probably not as easy to install, but hey I hope I'm wrong, cuz like I said, I kinda secretly want the honda even if I tell myself I should get the miata.

I have driven a few AP1's, and I can attest to the hair-on-the-arms-raising feeling it delivers. It seriously feels like you are driving a racecar with that motor it has.

They've both been doing it for years, track proven, and Corky Bell knows a thing or two about FI.

The FM and BEGi kits are expensive compared to a DIY setup, but they take a lot less work and are damn reliable.

you have to ask yourself 2 questions....

how serious about performance are you?
buying a cheaper n/a miata and adding aftermarket FI and mods totally $14k will build you wickedly fast miata.

how serious about style are you?
its not even a question here. the s2000 is in a completely different league. its far and away more stylish.

Looks are subjective. The Miata is the winner here in my Opinion. My father has a Miata and I have driven quite a few S2000's and I just don't like them all that much.

I missed an opportunity to buy the last of the Mazdaspeed Miatas they had at a dealership. They had so many of them, they were selling at something like $14,999 brand new.

I should have bought one.

220whp in 2400lbs is a lot of fun. wouldnt take much to get a msm there.

You can install the new retractable hardtops on an older miata? That's quite interesting. I would consider that at some point after performance mods I suppose. After checking out flyin miata and BEGI, I am not really convinced that that getting a base miata and then modding it would be any cheaper than the mazdaspeed. It seems like I would need to spend about 2800 just to be at the bhp I would have in a mazdaspeed after an intake mod. Also the front bumper is cooler in the speed, and those things aren't free either. I could be wrong, but I really don't see how a very low miliage base miata, (probably around 9 grand or so, realisticly) would end up being cheaper than a mazdaspeed with similar mileage for 13.5'ish.

Am I missing something here, or is the trick that you have to get a really old one with low miles like a 95 or something. They do exist but are damn hard to find, and usually end up being an automatic. ughghhh

^ 2009 was the first year of the retractable hardtop and there are still a few around.

Many good, well proven, aftermarket FI setups for the Miata.
