There's a tuner shoot out that is coming out in Car and Driver where the leaders in R32 tuning (HRE?) bring their twin turbo R32. The R32 runs a 12.02....the vishnu EVO runs in the 11's. The HRE R32 price tag is ~$70k (including the R32)... the Vishnu Stage2 $40k (including the EVO).

Just because you can drive over the speed limit doesn't mean you have a fast car. The auto RX8 runs high 15 / low 16's in the quater mile. That is not a good time....that's on par with a full size pickup truck. There is a whole host of regular cars that have that same or better acceleration. Trust me, if you were to drive the EVO you would be blown away by it's acceleration....and in the realm of sports cars, it's not even that fast. There's still another level beyond (C6, Viper,...etc).
So again we have someone base their opinion on straight line performance, not only that, but if my car can go over the speed limit does that not (by law) consitute "speeding"? So if I am in fact "speeding" am I not going fast? which makes me by default the owner of a "fast car"? :D While there may be a whole host of cars that can go in a straight line as fast as an auto 8 (or manual for that matter) that doesn't disqualify them or the 8 as not being a fast car, plus this "list" of average cars probably don't corner, brake, or have the looks the 8 has. Even if I were "blown away by an EVO's acceleration", what's left after that? Even going fast in a straight line can get old, a car needs to be enjoyable from all sides, not just in one area. Personally i have great respect for all the evo and the sti, even the srt4 as they have broken a lot of ground in a lot of the ways, but I also feel that the 8 is a fast car even if it's 1/4 times may not be all that spectacular.

well i almost bought the evo over the rx8. i actually had a deposit on an evo before i saw the rx8. What swayed my decision? The styling. When it i thought of it hard.. the evo wins the power HANDS DOWN!, but do i really need that power? Its a ncie car but the rx8 so much more aesthically pleasing, which is VERY important in my minds. after driving the rx8 my ONLY regret is that fact that is not that great of a daily driver here in NY.

In the winter I would take an EVO w/ winter tires over an RX8 w/ winter tires.

By your definition, every car and truck is fast. In fact, I think the only vehicles that don't fall into your category of fast are land movers. I don't think "rabbit" speed will get you to 61 mph.

It seems that most of the EJ257 shortblock failures are due to poor engine management due to the youth of the engine and inexperience of tuners rather than an inherently flawed or difficult design as you insinuated. No engine will support substantial power gains without proper tuning, especially those using FI to obtain this extra power. Right now, the STi tuner crowd is nearly 15 years behind the 4G63 tuners in terms of knowledge, experience, and aftermarket parts, but they're catching up rather quickly. Back when the first turbo DSMs came out, their owners had similar problems modifying their cars that took years to iron out. I would expect it to be no different for the STi tuners.

Those lawn mowers they race on tv get up to 60+, so I guess they count as well :D
