RX 8 or G35 coupe?
#80
i looked at the G35, before buying my 8... i liked it but i liked the 8 better... the 8 looks better, although the G35 has a more powerful engine... my mom looked at it too and in her own words said the 8 has more "WHAM, BANG, ZOOM"... it just looks sportier, cooler....

Alright BillR, I wanted to ask you about your opinion on the interior quality of these two cars. I sat in a RX-8 over the weekend for an hour during the Rev-It-Up event and I was not very impressed with it overall. I noticed the following:
1) Black plastic material on center console? Looks cheap, feels pretty solid, gets dirty and scratches easily.
2) A-Pillar plastic is flappy, flexes and looks like you can pry it open with your pinky and see the airbag underneath.
3) The headliner is like styrofoam... not solid at all, feels like a cheap foam padding with cloth on top.
4) I have heard a lot of people complain about the G35 center console silver trim, but the ones on the RX-8 center console are much worse~ they are hollow sounding, flexes and bends with minimal pressure. Scratches very easily and feels like cheap plastic toy material.
5) The B-Pillar doesn't feel that strong, the suicide door shakes significantly when you close the front door.
6) The dash and doors are full of hard plastic with no cushion. the doors in particular feel very light and unsubstantial.
Other things I noticed
a) Seating position feels much lower in the RX-8 than the G35C. I had to 'climb out' of the RX-8 where as you just 'step out' of a G35C.
Since you own both cars, maybe you can evaluate whether or not my observations were right or wrong...

-- It may look cheap, but it is very solid. I doesn't scratch as easily as the G's console. Nor does it rattle. It does show dust though.
2) A-Pillar plastic is flappy, flexes and looks like you can pry it open with your pinky and see the airbag underneath.
-- so??? A pillars are cosmetic- who cares how how strong or flimsey the plastic is. Quite honestly, I have never even looked at them for any type of comparo.
3) The headliner is like styrofoam... not solid at all, feels like a cheap foam padding with cloth on top.
--see my answer above.
4) I have heard a lot of people complain about the G35 center console silver trim, but the ones on the RX-8 center console are much worse~ they are hollow sounding, flexes and bends with minimal pressure. Scratches very easily and feels like cheap plastic toy material.
-- My G console is willow. It is stiff plastic and like the titanium; very easy to scratch or mar the finish. The 8's console is much more rugged than the G's. I had to put felt padding between the plastic on the G to rid it of rattles. So far (3k miles) the 8 is rattle free.
5) The B-Pillar doesn't feel that strong, the suicide door shakes significantly when you close the front door.
--It does shake some, but so does the G's window when closing.
6) The dash and doors are full of hard plastic with no cushion. the doors in particular feel very light and unsubstantial.
-- But they don't rattle!!!
--If you are going to compare the interior, the 8 has better materials and build quality. It is more solid feeling and sounding going down the road. That being said, the G (to me) is MUCH more confortable and roomy. In the 8, I feel very closed in. This will sound wierd, but the 8 is harder to get out of.
The 8 will out handle the G, but the G will outrun the 8.
--If I were to choose only one, (sorry RX8club guys) it would be the G. For "MY" criteria, it is the better machine.
Both cars have thier plusses and minuses. Each person has different needs and wants. I don't think the cars are directly comparable, to me; they are really too different.
Other things I noticed
a) Seating position feels much lower in the RX-8 than the G35C. I had to 'climb out' of the RX-8 where as you just 'step out' of a G35C.
-- I agree 100%

The doors on the 8 are lighter probably because they are much shorter. It is a 2 door, where the 8 is a 4 door.

The door is shorter but lighter the door the better regardless of the size of it. The goal for sports car is to make it light, the goal of a GT car is to make it convertible. You have both you should know.

BillR, back seats. What are your thoughts on their plusses and minuses for seating adults? Which will accomodate a baby seat more easily?

With a baby, the 8 has MUCH better rear seat access. The G would be tough to manuver a baby and seat back there.
BTW: The front seats on the G are pretty much on the floor board too. Both seats (8 & G) are about the very same height off the road.

g35 coupe is a pretty nice car, but for me, it has 2 major pitfalls: it's extremely ugly, and the exhaust drone drives me crazy. other than that, it's a decent car. the 8 is more of a cult car; you get it 'cuz you want it. g35 is more for the masses; enthusiasts buy it, but a fair number of people buy it 'cuz it's cheaper than 3er coupe but just as yuppie. oh and you may think it's bigger than the 8, but i sat in the back of a g coupe once and for a 6-footer it's way more claustrophobic than the back of the 8. i like the new g sedan better

why not? you clearly want to try something different. I do like the tone of the VQ35, and it's a powerful car, but driving the 8 is way more fun and exciting. The g is heavy and feels like a luxury coupe. good luck with whatever you do
