RX-7 found in Japanese cartoon

I own a japanimation series called "Guyver" that I got into about 10 years ago. This week I have been watching one two-episode vhs per night. Tonight I was on tape 4, which is actually Volume II episodes 1 and 2. In episode 2, one of the characters is driving a red 2nd gen RX-7. The only problem is that it is a 4 seater. But otherwise, it is definitely an RX-7. I had never noticed it before.

I believe that all 2nd generation RX-7s for the Japanese markets were 2+2 configuration. Those exported to the U.S. were 2 seaters. One can install seats in the back by removing the storage bins but the seats are only good for small kids or midgets.

The last model Spirit R, has a model with back seat also.

Its been in plenty of animes, too, most famous being Initial D.
A live action Initial D movie is being made in Hong Kong now, should be released in a month.

Look for RX-8s being represented in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex as well.

looks like I'll have to watch GITS again. But considering GITS SAC happens in the year 2032., I think, The 8 must be a collectable by then !!!

^ I think one of the production guys has a rotary fetish. There is a scene where the 8 appears on screen in a parking garage (on screen for a few seconds). Later they use one in a drive by and chase. I haven't finished the series yet but these appeared somewhere in disc two or three IIRC. Let me check something...

"classic" cars being used in futuristic anime is not unheard of. eX-Driver takes place in the future and the cars of the main characters include a lotus europe, a lancia delta, a caterham 7, and a STi.

I found my old thread. It lists the episodes of GITS:SAC that the 8 appears in.

In fact, all RX-7s (1st gen, 2nd, and 3rd) could be had in a 2+2 seat config in Japan. Those that say the RX-8 is not a sports car due to its back seat (compared to the 7), don't know the origins of the 8's predecessor well enough.

I just watch an anime called Tenjoh Tenge and I saw the 3rd gen RX-7 and the Rx-8. It was some radom shot of traffic during the anime.

Which episode?

I got pissed off with Tenjo Tenge when the stupid flashback episodes with her brother kept draggin on... :p

There was also a thread here a while back where someone found the RX-8 in an episode of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, I posted screen caps to the thread but don't remember the episode.

Jagurgod:

Cartoons are a form of animation
Anime is also a form of animation

Anime != Cartoons >_< :p

I can't believe none of the American networks have picked up Initial D yet. Cartoon network especially would get a huge boost to their ratings because Initial D seems to draw more casual anime viewers.

i've never thought of it, but you are SO right.

initial D has already been americanized by tokyopop and their butchered translated mangas and their masses of products they've imported, besides the series already a highly watched anime by americans, cartoon network would make a killing put hosting a dubbed version of the first two seasons on their Adult Swim segment.

Heard the live action movie is not so good

More weird actually, as they are all Hongkong Actors and Actresses, each having Japanese names, in Japanese town lookalikes, but speaking Cantonese Chinese... heheh.
