Question about my car...

Hey fols,

I currently own a 97 pontiac grand am gt.
And for the last year it has been getting around 11 mpg.
I don't drive a hell of a lot and I am filling it up every week.

Does anyone know why it is happening?
I got a tune up a lil over 2 years ago, and it should have corrected any such problems.
Could it be the ethanol mixture in the gasoline screwing me up?
thanks

Get a compression check done on the engine. You may have bad valves or rings. You could also have the A/F ratio checked. The car could be running rich due to problems in the fuel system.

Something definatly went wrong or broke if it changed over night. Get a compression check as suggested above.

Yeah, a GrandAm is suppose to do way better than that.

My last car was a 97 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi...I loved that car. I'm sure your's has the 3800 6 cyl. Mine, even with the supercharger got about 18 in the city and about 26-28 hwy. The engine doesn't have a cam (all electronic). Did you take it to a dealership? I found out a long time ago to put up with a 30-50% increase in service costs, but you generally get a better job (I let a garage with a good rep touch it and I really paid the price!). As with most cars, tuning is the issue and probably your's.

He probably has the 3.1L 60* V6 in that car (or maybe even the 2.4L I4, which would make the poor gas mileage even more troubling). The '97+ Grand Prix came with versions of the Buick 3.8L 90* OHV V6 (the L36/L67 NA/SC engines) that you're familiar with, maybe that's what you were thinking of? The L67 does have a cam, located right beneath the S/C.

/Parents own a '97 Grand Prix GT
