im going to risk big time being flamed for what about to write - but here goes:

Katrina victims... I realize that was a national disaster and at the time serious help was needed for these people in effected areas. I'm from Houston, TX (now currently in DFW Texas for work) I have a unique perspective on the "Katrina Victim" -- there is nothing like watching the crime rate in your area triple in just two weeks because of katrina victims, nothing like knowing my TAX money was going to pay for their credit cards to go buy smokes and lap dances, and the great feeling of paying for them to live in better places then *I* live rent and bill free. And the best example - I am in hotels a lot for work, I was in a long term job that required me to live in this very nice candlewood suites for an extended period. Katrina victims were housed there and how much fun do you think I had staying up listening to all of them drink cheap 40's in the parking lot at 3am beatboxing and hollering when I had to wake up in the morning to go to work?

I'm going to go ahead and just say it, Katrina (for some of these Katrina survivors) has been the best thing to happen to them in a long time if you look at it in certian ways. They got a year long PAID vacation, free rent, free food, pretty much free everything.

I saw on the news a few weeks ago how several families that were housed in nice apartments being paid for 100% by the govt. were given a *SIX MONTH* notice that on a specific date their utility bills would no longer be paid for and covered for free, guess what happend? Nobody said anything until two weeks before the date, they all started bitching and crying "we need more time, we cant support ourselves yet" blah blah. One lady had the ***** to get on camera and say "we try searching for jobs, my sons go down to the unemployment office every day and look"

How ******* stupid are you if you think thats all you can do to look for a job? I'm only 24 yes, but I know if I want a job and im desperate and REALLY want to work I go in pretty much EVERY place I see and ask if they are hiring? If all you do is hang out at the unemployment office, you dont really want a job, you want a hand out.

To the real people that lost family members and their homes and lives - I feel for em'. For every other piece of **** that got free housing, free food, free money, free cigarettes, free utility money, and free everything else, and on top of all that generosity thought the best way to pay us back is to steal from our city and trash our neighborhoods, I hope the next flood wipes you out

toxin for the win.

While there were some people who needed help, most of them are already back on their feet. Whats left now is all the scum and degenerates that katrina washed out of new orleans.

Heh, I remember reading that new orleans is one of the safest cities now.

[edit]Oh, these are also the people that have 30 ******* kids by 10 different "babys daddys" and expect handouts from the government and me to help them. friggin jerks.[/edit]

thanks for sharing your perspective. i think its easy to assume that every victim is struggling just to survive when we are 2, 3, or more states away from the situation. thats what we are told...'keep giving, keep giving'

Great Ideas sometimes get executed in the wrong manner. Instead of donating to a Katrina victim, donate it just to Habitat for Humanity, and let them decide who it goes to. It's pretty muffed up when you think about the fact that the car will probably be wrecked by other jealous Katrina victims. Not only that, but the victims who recieve the car will have another expense on their hands, namely car insurance.

I doubt it.. "According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, over 20 percent of Texas drivers carry no insurance while operating vehicles on state roads."

Wow, way to generalize an entire group of people based on your limited experience. Good job.

if it were just a handfull of people causing the problem, maybe I was being too general. But when the crime rate in an ENTIRE city the size of houston and Dallas etc etc skyrockets overnight coninciding with the arrival of Katrina Victims... I think I have a right to generalize.

I never said they were ALL bad people, but I do believe that a majority of Louisiana's "worhtless ****" population got washed over here to us and now we get to deal with it. There are legitimate people that needed help and they got it, but the people that hang around a full year after the fact begging for handouts? Be my guest if you want to feed and house them for free, but when it comes to my money? **** off

How would you react if you had bus load after bus load of Katrina victims sent up to your city? Straining and already strained social services system, tearing up your city and stealing from your neighbors. All you know is what you saw on TV a.k.a "the poor people who REALLY did need help", what you didnt see is all the **** that got dumped on our cities here in texas.

Although it didn't say, I'm guessing that the car got auctioned off and the money went to one of the charities.....which is different than government aid. That is what usually happens.

I was in Houston attending a wedding at the time of Katrina, and lived in Dallas at the time. Granted there were people who genuinely needed help, there were also a lot of people that fit Toxin's description. I'm with him on this one.

On a side note... f*ck bono.

I would have rather seen the car donated to the family of a Marine - some kid who was called to double duty - be a real nice homecoming present - especially as he is doing something to protect the economy and the place where the car was built

- or maybe to one of the Church's which did so much to help rebuild New Orleans and provided food, shelter and real care for the survivors!

Or better still, it could go to one of the police stations for an officer who actually stayed on duty, didn't join the looting, and tried to get the place back in order - Now there is a worthy cause!

FWIW--The original article said that the car is going to N.O. Habitat for Humanity, so I am confident that either the vehicle or the proceeds from its sale will be used well. Habitat is pretty unique among charities and NGOs in fostering self-reliance in its beneficiaries by promoting home ownership and demanding sweat equity as partial compsensation.

I view the bigger issue from a couple of perspectives:

1. My current home and work community was devastated by Katrina. In contrast to what I hear and read about N.O., the people here on the Mississippi coast have accepted the aid so generously offered by the rest of the country and are well on their way to rebuilding homes, lives, and communities.

2. My permanent (and weekend) home is Houston. Thank you, Toxin for sticking your neck out and expressing some very sane perspective. I agree with you entirely. (But you certainly do not shun controversy!)

3. I think I'll pretty much keep my mouth shut about being a taxpayer and insurance premium payer. I do carry standard, wind, flood, the whole bit on both residences. I wish everyone else did.
