Petrol price

How much are you paying for a gallon of petrol.
It's £0.85 a liter.
Which if my maths is right is $7.20.

On the West Coast, 91 octane (the highest grade we get here) is $2.75 a US gallon. At 3.7854 L per gallon, that's $.73 per liter, or (at an exchange rate of 1.8836 dollars per GBP) £0.39 a liter.

The actual cost of the gas itself is actually no more than here in the States They just tax the ever-loving **** out of it. And, yes, much of that goes towards public mass transportation.

Ahahah, that's a good one!

The automobile has been for years the cow that European governments milk to the bone. Excises and taxes represent, in my country (don't want to tell you which, but it's a chocolate and waffel super-power) over 75% of the pump price. The amazing thing, is that, the price is calculated that way :

fuel cost
+ transport (so far so good)
+ massive excises (ouch!)
+ VAT (value added tax) on all of the above! Excises included!!! So basically, you pay a tax (VAT) on a tax (excises). Amazing, I told you.

Fuel prices are so high, there is some debate starting on a excise rate reduction for fuel, as a compensation. But that would mean less dosh in the government's wallet. It's bad enough for them most people drive in fuel economical diesel hatchbacks, which reduce the taxman's income. Mind you, they found some way around that issue some years ago by creating a special tax for diesel car, as they pollute more you see.

The automotive industry is the industry that probably made the biggest effort to reduce their impact on the environment. All that paid by the customer who bought them, that is us. Today, a gasoline car emits less pollutants than a 50cc 2-stroke moped. Still they want us all to take that 30 year old, un-catalysed, smoking diesel bus to go to town, or a moped.

Funny also too see that excises and taxes are high on all products that make people really addicted : alcohol, cigarets, and cars.
I don't smoke, I sometimes drink wine but could survive without, but I'm addicted to cars. I'll never give up driving my car...

Yep looks like we are been ripped off. I know 75% is tax. Still if they don't get you one way they get you another. Public transport ! I worked on buses for 16 years, was the only time I got on one was to fix it.
