May we suggest that you might enjoy something in a Dodge or Chrysler sedan, something traditional, conservative, secure, and colored either white or silver, so you can blend with traffic....

if you have an evo putting down those numbers on a 30 or 35 i will take 2 here is the best if could find on an evo but it has a gt 42 and runnin 110 race fuel. http://www.norris-designs.co.uk/demo-evo9.htm it has a completly built moter other than being bored out... i am sorry i am callin bs on this a 900 hp evo on a stock block not happing the one in the link above is sportin 841hp with the 42. I couldnt see anyone driving this or building something like this to have as a daily driver. the fuel alone would rape you. either car can be built to make a fast daily driver. ams's evo is hitting the numbers of460-470 and that isnt anywhere near your 900+.

I can't quite make out what you're saying in half the thread but I'll give this a shot... An Evo with a stock turbo with some boltons and a tune is faster than any VF22 WRX out there and needs no real engine work. Though head studs are a good idea... The glass tranny thing on the WRX is blown way out of proporting, yes there have been a good amount of failures, especially on the earlier cars, but my tranny had no issues and of the 20 or so WRX owners I knew in my area not one of them had any issues other than a couple guys that needed some new synchros which was their own fault. Yes, you can do all that to an STI and have a very fast car, but mod for mod you're still not going to keep up with an Evo.

No, an Evo with a GT35R is not going to put down 900+ whp and you're not going to make that much power on a stock block. I never said you could... But, you can make a lot more power on the stock block of an Evo than an STI.

Here's a video of a customer car, it was a daily driver, and was the infamous Evo that has the street racing videos all over the net.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWSqG4-zlHA

AMS's shop car is up over 1000whp now. They have tuned at least 3 other customer cars to similar levels (one customer car his 1041whp) in addition to the one above. Then there are other shops putting out similar numbers, such as Buschur.

Which is better is certainly a personal thing. I'm not going to argue with you thinking Subaru is better since I love Subarus. However, I was simply pointing out that if you want to raise your HP for cheaper and easier then the Evo is the way to go.

Hey guys,

I've kept an eye on Rx8 club but not posted here much...hopefully I can change that. I met a guy a while back in the short time I was selling Mazdas and he had just traded in his Evo because he "felt the car had no soul."

I wasn't too sure what he meant at the time till he began to explain the workings behind the car and how it was built. Granted, by best friend has an Evo and many of his friends are Evo owners as well. He has at least 600 whp in his current setup and the vehicle is amazing when it comes to performance and how it drives. Still, I found myself missing something that the Rx8 was able to deliver...the total package.

Sure while there are exotic sports cars for a bajillion bucks which would probably require me bringing a change of shorts each time I drove it, for the cash spent and the time invested the Rx8 was more than I imagined I could get out of a sports car. The Evo, and STI while excellent performance machines, provide many handicaps when it comes to comparing the AWD platform to that of rear wheel drive. Again, I'm not saying people who drive these cars are somehow inferior in skill because I know my buddy, again, is going to have to totally learn to drive over again going from a 300 to 400 whp platform to 600+. The Evo is totally loaded with stability control electronics that aid the driver and in many cases almost takes the fun out of it. In many respects the car can drive itself. Still, the Evo needs a skilled driver to take it to the max. I've watched numerous Evo's barely make it 15 seconds down the 1/4 mile track cause the young teenage drivers couldn't tell 1st from 3rd.

I don't know, I suppose if everyone was interested in HP per $ spent everyone would be buying honda civics and dropping 10k in them and tearing up the track. Sure even acuras have become less expensive to build. The Rx8 was clearly designed for turns, but also designed to turn heads. I haven't seen one civic (trying not to hate on civic owners) that I liked, nor impressed with. I've watched them do 130mph down the 1/4 and yawned. An Evo or STI, much better to look at but I've never been a fan of a 4 door sedan and I've always felt that a true sports car has a 2 door, compact design.

Yes I know the 8 has 4 doors according to my insurance company, but to the naked eye it's a 2 door coupe.

The rx8 is a love it or hate it platform. The rotary seems to scare people away or cause them to lose interest because it needs to be driven different than a piston engine. You can't simply step on the gas and expect delivery, it requires precise judgement of the gears, RPM's and avaliable power. I find myself having to plan moves in traffic, and having to anticipate power needs because at 4k rpms you can't move as quick as at 7 or 8k. This further increases my ability to read cars, antipate traffic movements and learn my gear box better because I have to wind up the engine. Sure, it's more work but the outcome is more rewarding.

The interior is a true cockpit design with a simple stance...everything has a purpose and while the 8 has a more luxary feel than most mazdas, it still gives a simple design. It's all business.

Sure, the meat and potatoes of the deal. Cost of upgrades can be spendy for the HP that you're gaining. Still, you have to factor in curb weight, weight distribution and the advantages the rotary brings over a piston engine. I've always told people comparing the Rx8 to other vehicles is almost apples to oranges because the rotary seperates you from the standard pack. Not to mention the arms length of awards the Rx8 has been given, the various 24 hour endurance race records it's set, and the recognition it's received over the years.

Again, it's a love it or hate it. There isn't any happy medium. This car isn't for everyone and neither is the Evo or STI. Still, at the end of the day I find myself looking over my shoulder at my Rx8 thinking I'm glad I made a good decision to follow my gut.

I have to disagree with a lot of your points. I don't see the RX-8 as being a love it or hate it car in the least, maybe in the looks department. Anyone that has driven an RX-8 is going to have a hard time not at least liking the car. Even when driven properly, some people just feel the RX-8 lacks power, and certainly many are scared off by the rotary engine. However, anyone that doesn't think the RX-8 isn't a very good car has probably never driven one.

The Evo has some gadgets and eletronic aids, however I don't think you can find a single car review or owner out there there feels they're intrusive. If someone didn't tell you they were there you'd never know it. DSC, now that's intrusive and can take the fun out of the RX-8.

Are you sure you're looking at an RX-8 interior? It's anything but simple and all business... If anything it's a bit busy, and would you like to explain to me the purpose of all those cute little rotary accents?

The advantages of the rotary are outweighed by the negatives for most people. for the average consumer the rotary hurts the 8 more than anything.

The STi is a great car and should keep you happy in the performance aspects of life. The RX8 is a great looking car, but not for everyone. The STi is a powerhouse that can tear up a track 12 months out of the year, but the looks are disputable. I chose the STi for the potential. Check out wrxfanatics.com for more subie information and help. NASIOC is the biggest forum, but it is not very friendly.

I am currently on my third subie, a 2004 STi. The engine should be back within two weeks and I will be aiming for 500awhp on 93 and over 600awhp on 116 (GT35R + meth). I will also be strapping a snowboard rack on top of it. That is why alot of people go for the four door (RX8 is a four door to everybody, quit kidding yourself Flash), awd, rocket sedan, wagon in a few cases. The other aspects of the evo/sti is good insurance rates, lots of room, and you can easily surpass 300awhp with minor mods. There is always the capablity to go for 500-600awhp on the stock motor/driveline for both cars. Now reliability will go down the tubes, but the cars can get there.

As for the handling issue. The RX8 comes in at .88g and the STi comes in a .92 (both according to R&T). So it is pretty hard to justify better handling being the sole reason to keep the RX8 since it falls short to the STi. But the RX8 does come in at 340lbs less than the STi.

My car's engine is being rebuilt due to a bad tune, not head gasket. A cracked ring (rotary guys can poke fun here) in cylinder two lead to the demise of my motor. Otherwise the car has no problem with holding the power.

The STi's 550cc injectors are not the weak point in the fuel system. It is the pump that falls short. My buddy is putting down over 300awhp on a stage II car with eBay tmic, crucial p&p'ed and coated manifold, and custom tune from ed at eq tuning. The fuel pump ended up being the weak point and was replaced with a walbro 255, the injectors are now down on their duty cycles. Like posted above, $200 will get you some ported injectors to flow 816cc.

If it is all about 900whp daily that gets ok mpg, look for a low mileage GN and you can get to 900rwhp for under $15k in aftermarket parts.

Just a few things...

The insurance for the STI and especially Evo are going to be more expensive than the RX-8. Those two are some of the most expensive (non exotic) cars to insure.

Skidpad numbers really don't mean a whole lot. Yes, it's one indicator but it's not the end all be all handling measurement. Yes, the STI probablyhandles "better" than the RX-8, but put the same tires on the two cars and the 8 isn't that far behind. Depending on who is driving some would even prefer the handling of the RX-8 since it's a lighter more numble car to toss around with less understeer.

Lastly, I've been in some modified GNs. One word describes them, terrifying. Not because they're so fast, but because they feel so unstable. Maybe a lot of suspension work would help, I'm not sure... But I don't think that was the only problem. Big bucket seats, rickety old American interior, automatic, and the aerodynamics of a brick are all factors. If I want big hp for the streets I'll take a Supra or Evo over a GN every time. That being said, I still love Grand Nationals, and would love to have one for a project car.

This is so true! My supercharged Stang was 'much faster', my sr20det converted 240sx was also much faster. But, I like driving my 8 MUCH better!! Speed is not everything!
