Anybody seen info on this before?

It's a piston engine with horizontally opposed pistons that spin a three lobed cam shaft. Their 'theory' page on the main site has an animation showing it well enough for me to understand (and I'm no mechanical genius).

This is the first "revolutionary" automotive engine design I've seen that looks like it might actually be more than a lot of hype and garbage. Very cool stuff.

 

Wow, looks amazing, and they have prototypes, not just a pie-in-the-sky idea either. Says only non-Austrialia investers are now allowed. Wonder what the share price is?

Is it a 'changewave' idea? Could be?

Q: Is the CCE engine like a rotary engine?

A: The CCE engine is a reciprocating piston engine, very similar to a conventional engine in the top end. We have replaced the most inefficient part of conventional engine with our twin trilobate design. It has no similarities with a rotary engine.


Still a great potential improvement in efficiency for the IC engine.

 

Hmmm, I'm sceptical - I've seen several different 'improvements' to piston engine efficiency, starting with the K Cycle engine back in the late 70s. With that one, at least, they modified the Otto cycle to achieve extra expansion on the power stroke - in a more efficient way than Mazda's Miller Cycle supercharged engine. This one looks like a traditional 4 stroke Otto cycle, just replacing the crankshaft with a different mechanism to translate the reciprocating piston motion to rotational motion. I'd save my money... there's huge logistical issues in getting a car company interested in something like this, and there's been dozens and dozens of similar alternatives proposed and prototyped like this. So far, none have actually made it into production as an improvement over the good old piston, rod, and crankshaft except our Wankel!

From what I understand, US, Japanese, and European automakers are very leery of changes to automotive technology. For one thing, they probably deal with a lot of people that try to sell them nonsensical designs because they are either con artists or just plain crazy. For another, the existing infrastructure for the Otto 4-cycle and associated parts is already in place and any change on a broad scale would be colossally expensive.

I think it is worth mentioning that the company is trying to bring the engine to market in conjunction with a Chinese company. Maybe they can find a startup over there willing to take a gamble on the idea.

The Dyna-Cam engine linked from that website looks to work from a similar theory to the revetec engine. They're laid out a lot differently, but the idea is similar - changing the way the pistons turn the crank by improving over the current rod design.

 

Incredible engine. I will be very interested to see what kind of power and fuel economy that engine will produce.
