Actually, I'd like to see Micheline back, other than their problem at Indy years ago, they were pretty darn good tires. Great race though...Webber put in one hell of a drive!! I'm going to enjoy watching him for the rest of this season...guy has nothing to loose and driving the best car

 

I will always hold that against Michelin, along with the shitty luck I have had with their street tires. Bring back either Bridgestone or Goodyear.

 

....Wouldn't that be something to see Goodyear back in F1! Yeah, i'm not a big fan of the Micheline street tires, you have to spend a small fortune for their good ones...and their regular stree tires don't seem to grip for ****. I had a set that came from the factory on my Mazda 6, they had really crappy grip, BUT, darn tires lasted FOREVER!!! I couldn't burn them up fast enough.

Wow, interesting findings about the tires. Every blow out occurred on teams running the rear tire on the wrong side. This in addition to extremely low tire pressures well below the limits Pirelli recommends. Are the teams trying to set Pirelli up or what?

Imho the teams are just trying to reduce those crappy tyre's pressures to increase grip without risking to overheat the tyre.

I doubt mercedes and Ferrari would like to lose valuable points just to set pirelli up.

 

There must have been a grip increase by swapping right/left tires at the expense of life time.

 

A common practice in lower serieses is to invert the front tyres so that they rotate in the opposite direction. That's usually done to maximize braking grip.

^I think the FIA has allowed teams to use their race drivers, at least for one day of the test. Ferrari are just taking as much advantage as they can of the situation.

As for Michelin, or any tires on the street, I don't think they really bear any resemblance to those used in F1. I'm pretty sure they are using different factory, designers, etc. And I do quite like the PSS - I had more grip with those on my (modified) civic, than I do in the RX-8 on stock dunlop tires. They are also reasonably comfortable, long lasting and quiet. The same is true for conti DW. OEM all seasons are a different tire - MXM4 does not have a lot of grip, dry or wet, compared to summer tires, but does last forever, is quiet, comfortable and works to some extent in low temps... I guess all this means you should evaluate each model of tire in its own right, and also that oem tires are not going to have as much grip as some of the aftermarket options as they place comfort and durability as higher priorities.

 

My PE2 have crappy sidewalls, are unpredictable when driving hard and tend to overheat...

I agree that the race-regular production correlation ends with the logo though

 

Not going to disagree on the PE2, they are a fairly old design now and I would guess similar to the Dunlop SP Sport 2050 I currently have (somewhat crappy in all of grip, noise and comfort, although my dunlops are fun to drift at an autocross).

So, PE2, SP Sport, crappy by modern standards, PSS, Z2 good in their respective categories

 

I agree... i bought the PE2 because they were dirt cheap for the miata.
The next set of rubbers will most likely be bridgestone (adrenalin re002) or whatever is in that category.
I cover around 4k miles a year and i'm confident enough when it rains not to hug a tree on semislicks.

As a matter of fact i drove the megabusa under the pouring rain one day and it was freaking fun. Other people probably only got the "freaky" part... they were avoiding me as if I were a taliban driving a bomb car.

 

This qualifying is super tight. Ferrari, Red Bull, Lotus and Mercedes. It's anyone's bet as to who will take pole. Sorry for one talented German.

Don't worry about that. This allows them to use the soft tires at the end of the race when the fuel load is lower and the tires will last longer.

Why didn't they do 1 lap on the softs and then one on the mediums?
