Hitting a spring at that speed sure is serious. The consequences were non-permanent though. After the sight and reflexes are back, the whole driver should be back.
Severely damaging an elbow, amputating fingers and hand, then putting them back together is a way bigger cause of concern imho.

Ferrari and Red Bull have confirmed they have resigned from the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) in the midst of a row over the Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA). The news follows a series of meetings among the teams over how to control spending in the sport fairly and transparently under the RRA. There had been a certain amount of mistrust between the teams over the RRA, leading Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner to question the purpose of the organisation earlier this year.
On Friday a FOTA spokesperson told ESPNF1 that two teams had issued a resignation and shortly afterwards both Ferrari and Red Bull confirmed the news in separate announcements. The two teams will have to serve a two-month notice period before they leave the organisation and a FOTA spokesperson added that there would be a meeting of the teams "early next week, or as early as possible, and it will have to be seen where those discussions will bring them"....

The photographs were taken by American Dean Adams. He was sent to Germany in December of 1956 courtesy of the US Army. The 24 year old Private was stationed at Baumholder. Having been bitten by the sports car racing bug after watching Paul O’Shea and Pete Lovely at the Seattle Sea Fair race in Bremerton, WA, Dean quickly found the Nürburgring.
Accompanied by his wife Barbara, the couple attended the 1957 ADAC 1000km, German GP and Le Mans 24 Hours. Dean used a ANSCO Regent 35mm camera and primarily shot Kodachrome film. All these years later he still remembers the incredible sound of the Masserati 6-cylinder engines and the ground shaking noise of the Lancia V-8 Ferrari’s.
The following is Dean’s recounting of the day’s excitement. “We watched in amazement as Fangio built a commanding lead, then stopped for fuel and tires, restarted calmly in 3rd place and began setting lap record after lap record, finally passing Collins for second place then out braking Hawthorn for 1st place! We started the race near the South curve and did move around some, but were back near the South curve again late in the race and witnessed Fangio’s famous moves – I sure wish I had pictures of that one, too!”

Kimi Räikkönen was having a ****
Räikkönen, driving his last race for McLaren, had just missed the speech given by Pelé to commemorate Michael Schumacher, who was about to battle Fernando Alonso for the world title in what was then expected to be Schumacher’s last race. “I was having a ****,” he told ITV’s Martin Brundle on live TV, who was quick with a rather amazing retort: “Obviously, you have a nice, light car on the grid then.”

FIA lists 2012 regulation tweaks
More at: http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/66140.html
The FIA has made a number of tweaks to Formula One's technical and sporting regulations in order to tidy up some grey areas.
For the most part the regulation changes have been expected, such as moving cars' exhaust position to limit the aerodynamic effect of the exhaust gases, but others are new.
In 2012, races - including stoppages for red flags - will only be allowed to run for four hours after the rain-affected Canadian Grand Prix ran to four hours and five minutes earlier this year. Another tweak will see lapped cars allowed to unlap themselves at the end of a safety car period to ensure the race resumes in racing order. Regulations about cutting corners during in-laps in qualifying and weaving during races have also been tightened up in reaction to various incidents this season.

Wow, I figured the nail was all but in the coffin for Austin. That's pretty cool to hear, even though I'm not fan of almost all of Tilke's tracks. Does that mean that Texas is the host of the U.S. Grand Prix making Jersey the North American one?

Webber: F1 needs to crack America
more at: http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/2...crack-america/
Mark Webber is highly confident that Formula 1 will soon be able to make a solid impression in the United States, with America hosting two brand-new races over the next pair of seasons. In 2012, a purpose-built track will become home to the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas before a New Jersey street circuit houses the Grand Prix of America some nine months later.
F1 is yet to return to the USA since 2007, when Lewis Hamilton beat then McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso at Indianapolis. However, its reputation in the country was badly dented by the six-car race of 2005 which caused widespread backlash.
“I think Austin will be a good addition,” Red Bull’s Webber, third in the last two World Championship, told the Associated Press. “The track looks sensational, they have done a good job with the layout - a lot of undulation and sweeping, quick corners which is always challenging for us.

Conspiracy theory
I think that powers that be in American Motorsport are not entirely thrilled at Formula One's potential in the United States. I speak of the France family in particular who run NASCAR and GRANDAM as well as the people who run INDY. I remember when Lewis was scheduled to do a television appearance on the Letterman show and it was cancelled. The reason given later on was that they had another race car driver in the same week. Letterman is an Indy team owner of course and I wonder about the stir that a young black driver dominating a much more prestigious motorsport than we possess here would have caused, especially when NASCAR has it's forced minority training programs that bring nothing resembling the same success.

......that's a damn good point. Further, I don't think it's a schedule or money issue either that the U.S. only gets 3 or 4 races broadcasted on national network TV...the rest you have to see on cable TV. If F1 is going to make it in the U.S., they need to show the races on channels everyone gets..and a heck of a lot more than 3 or 4 races a season.

When I was much younger, the only F1 race broadcast in the U.S. was the Monaco GP on the ABC network (on a Saturday a month after the race if I remember correctly). This was before there was Speedvision that brought us motorsports.
I think Indycar has the most to loose.

I take that America doesn't like competition?
Indy is way similar to our gp2\3 cars, not very fast but action packed and on a tighter budget.
Just take the indy series out of the ovals if F1 is the problem.

Even nascar cars go at insane speeds but that's just top end crap imho, the real speed is the one you see in and out of a corner!
