Commentators criticized Heikki for not turning into the pits and instead, park it on the straightaway. Heikki's thought was the pit lane was so cramped and narrow, that it would be more dangerous to drive the car there than it would be to risk his own safety with having to put out the flames himself and leaving his back vulnerable to the cars zooming by at 150mph.

I honestly think Heikki caught his own car on fire though. After he spun he sat there and you could see on TV huge flames coming out of the exhaust. I don't know if he couldn't engage gear or what, but they were blue and I'm sure they were VERY hot.
Edit: Sweet! Here is the spin itself and you can see all of the flames coming out while it's all going on. Another thing to point out is towards the end you either see the glow of insanely bright orange headers or that is the fire itself.

As for hekki not going to pit, I am not sure why the FIA would be mad that he didn’t. Unless they wanted a chance of excitement in the pits. Personally I don’t want to see a car burning in the pits with all those gas lines hanging around. But maybe the FIA wanted another Ferrari fire in sigapore /shrug.
You're right alfy. Fuel, gas lines, electricity don't mix well with a car catching on fire especially now that there are less fire countermeasures in the pits because of the refuelling ban.
Heikki was brave enough to park the car where he could do no harm to other drivers and calmly extinguished the fire.

I am suppose to watch it on SPEED, since I don't believe TSN covers it anymore, but since I am almost always unavailable to catch the race. I watch FP1,FP2,Quali, and Race on BBC iPlayer. Technically, I am not suppose to watch it since I am outside of UK, but get around it with proxies. Before I discovered BBC iPlayer, I used to download all of my F1 coverage via bit torrent.

Hamilton Insists He is a Racer (wining)
Lewis Hamilton not changing style after Singapore crash

Lewis Hamilton has insisted he will not make any changes to his driving style going into the final four races of the Formula 1 season.
The McLaren driver has crashed out of the last two grands prix and has fallen 20 points behind leader Mark Webber.
But the Briton is confident he can still win the title, saying: "I'm a racer. I always race my heart out, and nothing will ever change that."
"There were different circumstances behind each incident."

rofl!
Alonso had to learn it the hard way after several crashes and DNF. The difference between the 2 is that Nando can make a good use of the stress, Hamilton loses his focus after a while.
What I like about him is that he foresaw Alonso's come back in several interviews.
For sure, if the 2 have to fight for the title Webber will have to step aside and focus on the championship he may or may not win in the next life
