ok, having owned a 2001 Eclipse GT, I have to say that I'm disappointed with the 4G Eclipse. The concept was ok, but the final form.... could use a lot of work. But still, 260hp and 260 torque, not bad.

Time wise who knows, probably a little faster (a few tenths) in the 1/4 but it will most likely trap at least a few MPH more than the RX-8 which means bye bye on the highway. If they keep the weight down it may be dipping into the 13s with 100+ mph traps, but something tells me the GT isn't going to be a lightweight.

Mitsubishi isn't going anywhere, and they will sell a hell of a lot more of these than Mazda does RX-8s. And yes it will be FWD, the already have an AWD drivers car in the Evo and I doubt they will go that route as a result.

It's such a shame what Mitsubishi has done with the Eclipse, the 1gs were such great drivers car and bang for the buck. I still miss my Talon TSI, and despise the fact that what was once a such a great car was turned in such a turd (the 3rd gen.). This one at least seems better but unless it handles way better than expected but it's still a disappointment coming from a previous DSM driver.

Oh, i know they won't go out, I think it is almost impossible these days. Although I wish they would smarten up. I love the evo for it's performance, but everything else is sorely lacking in my eyes. I am not in a position to have 2 cars at this stage in my life, so I would like to see a car with near evo like performancer a nice interior and some style. I thought maybe the G4 Eclipse would fill this role, unfortunately not. The concept had me pumped too, especially with talk of a hybrid engine good for 400 if i remember correctly.

Oh yeah, and we don't get the evo in canada, , we'll get this **** though

Mitsu is not, while still selling cars, doing so well now a days. They could have done better with the new Eclipse and they need to put more quality, style, etc into their next EVO. It should be a little bigger (but not more porkly) than the current car.

Man, that car is nasty!!! I would rather ride in a downhill racer made of rotting wood. But that is just my opinion . You would have to get me more drunk than mickey mantle to buy that thing...

I agree. I was REALLY let down. I have some photos in silver that make it look...um... a little better.

The wheel gap is rediculous. The interior is very nice though. I hate the optional wheels. They are ugly as sin.

That silver one does look a bit better. But what's with Mitsubishi and the 3-4 inch wheel well lip? The current one looks like they took a normal car and sideswiped a cement wall and now this one does too.

Well like it or not, this will force Mazda's hand. Now there is yet another car that will trounce the rx8 in a straight line. It's time for mazda to add hp to the RX8, It will be rather depressing to see, but this new Eclipse is sure to absolutely trounce the RX8.

Any performance numbers aside...

...I think this new eclipse is ugly. Period. In my opinion, the 2000-2005's looked better, and I didn't even really like the way THEY looked. Out of the 2000-2005's the 2000-2001's were the best looking, with the wider more aggressive mouth that didn't have the little fog light enclosures.

I'm someone who knows a lot about design, and the new eclipse design is just not impressive or good looking at all. It's SCARY how close it looks to a Cougar - but its even MORE SCARY that the Cougar LOOKS BETTER!

Depends on the weight which I'm not sure what it is. And even if it does beat it in acceleration, how is a fast ugly entry level 2 door car a threat to Mazda?

I will probobly own one of these as well though. I have had 9 Eclipse/Talon/Lasers. Why not make it 10? The car grew on me a bit when I saw the latest one with the optional GTS appearance package with optional 19" wheels.

They really did mess up not going with the concept style headlights. THe rest of the car I'm sure had to be changed to pass saftey and crash testing. One of the requirements on front bumpers is that the lower lip passes over a parking block. ...not sure how tall though.

I'm sure when I see it in person it will look better.

well most of the recent years of eclipses(95+) have weighed in around 3200+ lbs. thats for a base model. still pretty heavy compared to our 8's.

The new V6 Galant (which shares its frame and engine with the new Eclipse) weighs in at 3550-3700lbs. The Eclipse, riding on a slightly smaller version of the chassis, will probably weigh in at 3350-3600lbs, depending on options and what, if anything, the Galant has that the Eclipse does not. With 260hp and a similar number of lbft of torque, the 4G will almost certainly be quicker than the RX8 in a straight line, but all that extra weight along with Mitsu's current plans for the Eclipse all but guarantees that this car will be more of a highway cruiser than a canyon carver.

The current base model (Eclipse RS) actually weighs in at around 2900lbs. The only 95+ Eclipses that weigh ~3200lbs are the AWD 2G GSXs and the option-laden 2003+ V6 GTS. A couple of members weighed their V6 Eclipses at a track (1/4 tank of gas, IIRC) and reported ~3050lbs. The 3G Eclipses may have been a bit heavier than the 1Gs and 2Gs, but they're roughly comparable to the RX8 in weight.

This country loves hp and torque. Like the eclipse or not, it sells, and has kept mitsubishi afloat. They make money off this car I can assure you of that. I see at least 5 of them a day, if not more.

I will be truning in my dodge stratus rt (eclipse in a little different skin) in Feb. Have had an 8 since sept. unless there are major improvements in the eclipse there is no way it compares to the 8. Sure 260 hp would be nice (200 in the stratus) but the 8 far outshines the eclipse in every other way!
