I think they ran into some engine troubles.

At 4:57 pm (2h 12m running), Ben Devlin (#8-P2 Lola B07 46 Mazda) into the pits. 4 tires, fuel, no driver change. Checking the engine, but nothing out of the ordinary.

At 5:03 pm (2h 18m running), Ben Devlin (#8-P2 Lola B07 46 Mazda) into the pits. No fuel, no driver change. right on the cusp of the pits opening. Inspecting under the rear deck lid again, should be a long stop.

At 6:04 pm (3h 19m running), Ben Devlin (#8-P2 Lola B07 46 Mazda) back into the pits from the paddock. No fuel, no driver change. returning to the race.

Their best lap time is about 3 secs off pace.

Yea the coverage was horrible!! I thought with a day between the race and them airing it they could improve it some! Seriously it from the coverage people could think the whole race was freaking yellows! Assuming engine problems for the Mazda, I haven't heard otherwise.....

Crazy amount of news going around right now! Bob Bach is retiring so BK is no more, but rumor has it Dyson will be picking up the Lola-Mazda banner! Even better RML in the european Le Mans series has also switched to the Lola-Mazda so maybe we will even see Mazda at the 24hrs!! The Porsche spyders seem to be disappearing so who knows, we might have an shot at a class win.

From the news I could gather, RML is a very competitive team!! I would love to see Mazda return to the 24 hours, something we've hoped for in the last 4 years.

So, with BK gone, I think Dyson could pick up the cars as well, they raced Lolas for so long. I am sure they could refine the package as well, and get Michelins on the car to make it competitive in ALMS. Also, if this is the case, we'll definitely see two cars.

Theres still no hope for rotaries tho. Unless... Speedsource Lola coupe?

Wishful thinking...lol
Everybody is so tight lipped about rotaries possibly being let back in by 2011 race season. Fingers are crossed!

Ya I know, lol

Its a steep step up from GA to ALMS. Everything in ALMS costs so much more.
BK ran in the Star Mazda series before stepping up to the big league.

The first two seasons, they used a used courage C65, with a very cheap($) 3-rotor setup, the car was probably very cheap to run and maintain.

Then we had brand new Lola and new AER engine, and a few very expensive crashes...

Last season we had yet another new Lola!

In 4 years, they have gone through 3 cars, and an AER engine. From a car that probably costs a few 100ks(C65+3rotor) to tens of millions.

Could they have ran out of money, hence the fold?

Some interesting news/rumors?

http://murphythebear.com/blog/index....d-is/#more-274

The real action is in LMP2 (now there?s a surprise).

The Poughkeepsie boys will track a pair of Lola coupes (one wonders whether an Englishman would have retired had they thought of that sooner). Let?s say that?s nearly 100 percent. What is more sure (according to the poop in the paddock) is that the New York team wouldn?t do another stint with the Stuttgart cars for (as they say) ?love nor money.?

The boss from Wisconsin was said to have told the Wankel guys they had to ?step up, or it?s tenth place ? or worse ? forever.? On the record, the bear can?t argue with that. There?s an outside shot that the Milwaukee team runs two, making it four on the grid. For the New York team, Guy will be back, and Murphy thinks the rest of the pilots will, too.
Can someone with a little more ALMS knowledge translate this?

Wankel = Rotary for sure, hehe
Guy = Guy Cosmo?

Also, rumors are saying that Dyson is close to finalizing a deal with Mazda. The MZR-R might go into more Lolas over at the LMS side.

And well, if Mazda races in P2 next year, they could have podium finishes every race as the car count dropped to only 3-4 (for now). Maybe someone can slap together a C65 + 3-rotor again? lol

Well look at the progression of things .. spending more $ getting worse results? Why because they hired and fired certain people who were from certain mgmt groups that didn't fit the budget bk/mazda had...won't throw any names out there because the argument can never end but if your coming from audi to bk prospecting them to spend more money developing the car than the team is worth then you have a recipe for complete disaster.

also the mzr motor is not the best match for p2 cough cough notice the straight speed differences...

RML announces Mazda AER deal for 2009

RML’s LMP2 sports prototype programme has been one of the most successful of the last five years, with back-to-back victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours, and the class title in the Le Mans Series in 2007. Co-drivers Mike Newton and Thomas Erdos have established an excellent reputation as the driving line-up to beat in LMP2, especially at Le Mans, and for seven years the team has championed the motorsport heritage of iconic British marque MG.

From November 5th 2008 a fresh era begins for RML AD Group with the signing of a new deal with car manufacturer Mazda and race engine specialists AER. The deal means the end of the link with MG, but the start of an exciting new partnership for RML and the Mazda-Lola Coupé. “Everything is signed and sorted and we are very happy to have an agreement for two years,” confirmed Phil Barker, Team Manager at RML. “We shall be running the Mazda unit in 2009. It will be an evolution of the current Mazda MZR-R engine raced this year in the American Le Mans Series. It is a two-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine developed exclusively for Mazda by AER, and it represents not only an exciting way forwards for us, but also the continuity of our excellent working relationship with AER.”

The decision to follow this route was based upon the need to meet a complex series of requirements and parameters, based around the team’s decision to upgrade to the closed-cockpit Lola Coupé chassis. This included engine management and gearchange systems, as well as many other essential components. “There were merits and shortcomings to all the various alternatives we considered, but it was vital that we made a decision that was right for RML as a team,” said Barker. “The MG engine was nearing the end of its evolutionary prospects, but by contrast, the Mazda engine has the potential for considerable further development. It offers tremendous scope for enhancing performance over the coming years, while simultaneously offering us the opportunity to establish a relationship with a prestigious and forward-thinking organisation like Mazda.”

Mike Newton, CEO of AD Group, will co-drive the new Mazda-Lola with Thomas Erdos in 2009. “We had six enormously successful years with MG branding on the car, including two consecutive class victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours and a class title in the 2007 Le Mans Series,” he admits. “We’re very proud of those achievements, and also for having kept the flag flying so prominently for MG throughout that period. Ultimately, however, the funding from MG that we’d been lead to expect for 2008 never materialised, and I can’t deny that we were very disappointed by that. I shall be very sad to sever our links with such an historic British name, and I would like to take this opportunity to say thankyou to the many MG enthusiasts who have given us their support over the years. It has been much appreciated.”

The switch to Mazda was prompted by several factors. “The fact that the support we’d hoped for from MG never arrived, combined with recurrent engine problems that were significantly exacerbated by the fuel this year, meant that we neared the end of the season knowing that we’d have to look for a new engine in 2009,” says Newton. “Introducing the new Lola Coupé at Silverstone (for the final round of the 2008 Le Mans Series) allowed us to review the upgrade on the chassis in the light of back-to-back engine testing. It was a close-run judgement call between the Mazda and the Judd options, but based upon what we’ve learned, we’re confident that the advances made with the Mazda engine will allow us to move forward next season. Ultimately, we’ve struck a good deal that offers us an extremely competitive engine in conjunction with maintaining the excellent relationship we’ve always enjoyed with AER and Life Racing.”

Both drivers are keen to get their hands on the new car. “For a number of reasons we were well short of our full potential at Silverstone, yet we still gave a strong performance,” says an encouraged Newton. “We’re ready to take delivery of the new Mazda engine any day now, and combined with what we learned at Silverstone, we’ve got plenty of data to carry us forward towards a test early next year. Now I’m just looking forward to showing what we can really do with the coupé!”

It is an enthusiasm shared by Thomas Erdos, who will soon begin his seventh season as co-driver with Mike New ton. “I’m very excited by this new partnership,” he said. “Mazda is a major manufacturer with a strong association with Le Mans, having been the first and only Japanese manufacturer to win the 24 Hours (with the 787b in 1991, driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot). It’s very encouraging to have a partner of this magnitude, but I am also looking forward to continuing the excellent relationship we have with AER.”

RML AD Group has confirmed that Thomas Erdos and Mike Newton will contest the Le Mans Series again in 2009. “These are uncertain times, not just economically, but also in our sector of motorsport,” said Erdos. “There are many changes coming, and we don’t really know who we will be racing against next year, but the signs are that the series will remain strong. We’re moving ahead with our own programme, and I think we’ve made a very good decision.”

Erdos recognises that he’ll have to be patient. “We won’t be running the car again until we’ve adopted the full 2009 specifications,” he says. “We’ve had a fantastic six years of consistently competitive racing but I’m now really looking forward to driving the car with the new engine. It’s an exciting time for us.”

Further details on the Mazda AER engine will be released shortly.

While I can't run out and grab all the speed trap results from every ALMS race this year, every article I've read suggests the Mazola was walking the Porches and Hondas on the straights.

Let's face it, at this stage of the game engine performance is limited primarily by the rules of IMSA and the ACO. In the last few years IMSA has granted the I4 Turbo a larger restrictor, giving it more power. With Mazda's DI, I have no problem believing that AER can't make a solid P2 motor. They've been the class of P2 before, and I think they can easily do it again.

If Dyson is the new Mazda team in the ALMS, they'll have Michelin shoes and only the Fernandez Honda to beat. The little privateer from New York state has taken on Audi in the R8 and won, Mazda's in good hands with them, two cars, a chassis from Lola whom they've worked with in the past, and Johnny D steering the ship!

I know the rotorheads in all of us want something more torchoidal, but if this is what it takes to get some Zoom-Zoom at the 24 Huers and whipping fancy Hondas, I'm all for it.

Also, the latest rumor has a pair of Porsche Spyders being run by Tracy Krohn also in LMP2. As a quick catch-up, Tracy's a VERY wealthy oil man from Tejas that likes to park expensive race cars in sand traps around the world. If this plays out, Mazda has a chance to beat 'spensive Hondas AND Porkas in every race!

I don't know about that speed trap being good because I witnessed with my own eyes the bk getting passed on the straight.

I know AER has been testing the closed cockpit lola with the 4cyl from MG so a more fuel efficient motor from mazda can't hurt. Again its all nice and dandy to have these teams be benefiting from mazda's involvement yet mazda is just not serious enough about ALMS or EU Lemans.

They can run the spinners but they don't want to develop them! $ and marketing $ getting the best of things. I remember speaking to the BK boys back when they were testing at limerock w/ the R spec 3 rotor and they said they have been trying to convince mazda to develop the 4 rotor that will give them the boost they need w/ the new restricted plate but all talk fell down the pipe when mazda announced that it was changing directors. To me it seams mazda doesn't know what they want to do and just leaches from team to team...when they get serious and do what HONDA did then it will be realistic to expect wins. Or just bring back the factory effort...I'm sure people will be thrilled.

Factory effort could be not too far away. I personally think the chances are higher than ever in a few years into the future.

Toyota is going back to the 24hours with a Dome S102, or a modified one. This car has an interesting shape very close to the GT-One Toyota ran in the past. They could run the car on the ALMS grid against Audi, Acura as well, in LMP1.

With Toyota and Acura/Honda running in the 24 Hours, it should just be a matter of time Nissan develops one as well. Then we might see a Mazda, ran by MAZDA JAPAN, not MNAO. 16X will be on the roads by then as well.

Lets hope so because "THIS" effort is just lack luster. Yes BK had very impressive results with the 20b but with the way regulations were going its was obvious whats happening. Mazda doesn't have the money to produce custom engines at the costs porsche and acura are able to. 4 rotor w/ modern specs would have done the job back in 03 but now its just too late for that unless they really want to spend money. The new mazdaspeed motorsports prototype director is not a rotary fellow and since he's from audi he won't give a damn about it because thats now how races are won according to him.

My bet for the mazda team is many yrs of brainstorming like you said but will they make the aggressive move like acura?...they need to decide a platform to develop and a budget...thank god they made those SUV because those sales are funding all of this.

Toyota are favorites to use the DOME s102 as a platform but they will need a better car to topple the pace of the french and german teams. Especially at the pace and reliability of them. If you remember back to the GTone it was just the most advanced car, it was the fastest but failed to win because something always broke...the french have shown us that same thing last year... but lets see how things play out because you cannot forget how much data audi have vs dome and dome made the press by being able to run close #'s when audi was winning. Its all relative and sadly mostly $

It was reported as a rumor but probly close one that the french are spending 100 million on these efforts. Can mazda afford it? Not at this time
